Look at the Chinese Pandas. These are bears (carnivors) that have evolved into vegetarians. But are down to one single threatened species of food.frustrated

Polar bears live in a climate where vegeataton is rare and survive on fish and seal (bit of red meat there).

I used to breed dogs. Recall selling a pup to a family from Canberra who were vegetarians. They did want/insist on a top pedigree dog that would develop into the Standard. Not for showing or for breeding, just to be a family pet. We did have 1 in a litter that we would not give papers for because we did not feel it was "up to Standard" because had 1 ear that stood up. Not good enough for the Show Ring but still very well-bred. Not good enough for them as a pet.

So the top pedigree dog with papers dog had to be a vegetarian (they were willing to pay the price). We advised that it should be eating some meat products as dogs are naturally carnivores and the protein would help with development. About a year later, they contacted us and wanted their money back. Around dinner time, it would sneak out of the yard and attack other dogs to get their food WITH MEAT.

Our Labrador is gorgeous, has to be said
as I think all of them are.
Eating greens, well he does he likes most
not peas though. On their own, doubtful he
must have chicken or meat and mash in there too.

Just got back from the vet; my dog apparently has a torn "cruciate" ligament, that's why he's been limping. But he's losing weight and is off his food and they think he may have an obstruction.... a bone or something. Getting him checked out more thoroughly under sedation on Thursday.

not sure which vet you took him too Obs but the one on Scoresby rd, near the corner of Boronia rd do that cruciate surgery and are usually reasonably priced.
Animal Medical Centre Boronia if you are interested. Might be worth getting a quote.

Hope they can fix what ever is wrong

I have found that dogs love vegemite. Best way I found for them to have the tablets without spitting them out. My dog loved vegemite and when I did vegemite toast, he had to have one as well.

And bread soaked in milk. Bread is good as if there is a sharp bone, it might just take the sharp edge off a lodged bone and maybe ease it out.

Ordinary Heinz, Aldi, Black & Gold, No Frills, No Name soup (meaty varieties, not vegetable) is worth a try to get the dog to have something nourishing to eat.

And be a bit wary when the vet suggest a cat scan. They cost a fortune and all the vet does is ....

grab a feline out of a pen and wave it over them.

Sorry Obs, could not resist that.

Thanks for that Jem. I think it would be worth while. The vet I went to in the Gully can't do them, they have to get someone in and it would cost around $900-1000.

not sure it will be any cheaper than that quote, but it is a full hospital and I know they do those surgeries. It was them who looked after Gabby when she was attacked.

They certainly did the right thing by her

Yeah dogs will eat nuts, not sure they are good for them, but peanut butter is handy if you need to give them medication or a tablet.

Mum had 3 large Macadamia trees at her home in Sydeney. Her dogs would always go and crack open the ones on the ground to get the nut out. It was a mad scramble when we were shaking the trees for the kids to beat the dogs to them.

The oils in nuts are good for dogs, but should not be overdone as it can give "results"help

And sweets should be given only as rare special treats as these do lead to kidney failure (basically diabetes) while milk should not be given too often for the same reason. My dogs would only be given straight milk if they were very ill, only a taster in the water dish on when they were off their food and water.

Obs, is you dog eating yet????
