The problem with nuclear power plants is in many cases their back up systems are flawed in that they rely on pumps for cooling. These pumps are driven by electric motors. if they lose electricity the pumps don't work and the reactor over heats leading to a meltdown. Many plants have backup diesel powered generators to power the pumps but those diesels MUST start or they can't make power for the pumps.
This is what happened to Chernobyl the operators of the plant decided to test what would happen in the event of a loss of electric so they inserted the control rods into the pile which shut down the reactor. The reactor core was still extremely hot but by shutting down the reactor there was no electric to power the water pumps and there was no power to operate the motors that pulled the control rods out of the pile to get the generators going again what little water was left in the core turned to high pressure steam which blew the lid off the reactor. I read somewhere that the reaction only took 3 seconds from the point of no return til the core exploded. It was a failure due to the stupidity of the operators compounded by a centralized command structure where the operators didn't have authority to make crucial decisions.

HealthyLiving: Absolutely, ooby!

We have been blessed with a beautiful planet and have overall been very poor caregivers. There are those who do appreciate it and who try to tell the others, but to no avail. That is the message of this thread. It's very sad that such a beautiful place would come to ruin and destruction by the hand of mankind.

It's the Pride of man.

I like this quote:

"When all the land is destroyed,
and all the fish are dead,
then will the white man learn
that he can't eat money".
(Native American saying )

Yes reb, it's all wrapped in greed, fulfilling their selfish desires.

Great to see you!

I found it somewhat interesting to learn that a year's worth car emission does not spill as much toxin into the atmosphere as the eruption of one volcano. Except that all of it is happening around the world.

There are great efforts being made to return to the earth - Scotland has a big project to plant trees and reforest their country.

It really takes big governments and big impersonal corporations to take a stand to fix the problems to the environment.

It certainly would have more effect than the itty bitty recycling that I do - and turning off my lights more often is like spit in the sea.

Except that all of it is happening around the world. That sounds like the kind of propaganda spewed by friends of big oil. That's what they want you to believe so you think it's ok to drive huge cars and consume as much oil as possible.

Believe it or not, recycling has a major impact not only on the environment but also on the cost of everything. It costs 10X as much to make an aluminum soda can from Bauxite ore to a finished product than it does to start with a crushed used can. Keep up the good work, it helps more than you realize. Did you know that the catalytic converter on your car contains Platinum and has a scrap value of over $100.00? The money that your town gets from selling the things you recycle, plactic, tin cans, cardboard, paper, drain oil etc helps to keep your property taxes down.

I learned about the volcanos in my chemistry classes at FIU - maybe it's those state university educations....

my city is known for it's plastic industry -

and Florida's governor is a big wuss when it comes to environmental issues. Was supposed to build complete 11 miles of restoration to the everglades - only budgeted and worked on one stinking mile. Stinking politicians! frustrated

Buy British - or from whatever country you live in. A large chunk of wasted resources and damage to the environment is caused by global logistics. "Connecting" to the global community in this way is one of the least green things that we do, but of course saving the planet is subordinate to the Leftoid/multi-national's prime directive of globalism.

And the additional effects of relying more on local and national produce would be solving our debt and economic woes, and to remedy the stirring resentment that's arising from the productive men of the tribe towards the growing pool of aimlessly employed redundands.

Self-reliance is much, much better for the planet and future of our children than relying on imports and sweatshops. In fact, this plan for a greener economy is the only one that doesn't involve a massive reduction in living standards and therefore is the only one possible in the kind of world that anybody would want to live in.

Continue as we are and the end result will be a stalinist global bureaucracy that drives our standards of living down to the pitiful levels of coolie labour in the impoverished east. We can go green by becoming peasants. And our society will look like something from 1984 where the only people that have anything at all are those connected to the bureaucracy and upwards of 80% of the population are useless proles disregarded entirely by the established order.
