jac379: If it's not about race, or tattoos, how do you account for the difference in sales in each variable?

How do you account for the fact that using the same bait and fishing off the same dock, my friend caught more fish than me?

Does it suggest that the fish are biased against left-handed Texans?

So, are you saying it's pure chance?

jac379: The three variables were white hand, black hand and hand with a tattoo. Every other condition was the same.

Was it?
placed in more than 300 locales throughout the United States, ranging from small towns to major cities
For me location would be a variable as well.

jac379: As for courtesy, the article doesn't say if there was any communication between the seller and the potential buyer and I get variables here could muddy the water.
I suspect in order not to muddy the water, there would have had to have been no communication, but I don't think that was mentioned. Good point.

I think you mist something,
Researchers also found that buyers corresponding with a black seller also behave in ways suggesting they trust the seller less. They were 17 percent less likely to include their names, 44 percent less likely to agree to a proposed delivery by mail and 56 percent more likely to express concern about making a long-distance payment.

tip hat

No, I read the article refering to the study, not the actual study.

Must admit it was heavy going and as a lay person I didn't quite get the logistics in their entirety ,but thought it flawed as a purely economical paper. handshake

rizlared: It would be more interesting if this research had also been carried out in Europe.

Does China have race discrimination?

jac379: No, Life.

I'm not getting everyone else to do my homework for me, you cheeky wench.

I just came across the article by chance and as it was reasonably well written and transparent for a media representation of topical research material, I thought I'd post it and see what happened.

I've found the thread really interesting on a number of levels. What about you?

Kudos Jac. I am glad you shared the article - it is thought provoking. Is there race bias in Wales?

Glitch101: Hi young lady Hope you had a good X'mas.

I want to know where they are?

Seriously though it's like being in a till queue at the local Supermarket and changing tills because someone has a tattoo or has a darker skin than mine. Ridiculous.

Went into my local Marks and Spencer's the other day and saw a guy covered in tattoos serving on the shop floor. Nobody appeared to have a problem with him.

Hiya luverly, I had a really good Xmas, thank you...hope you had a good one too hug

One on my right shoulder and the other just above my left breast.

Yep, I think that piercings and tats are becoming more and more popular and acceptable. We've come a very long way from the days when I hid my pierced ears from my father because "only loose women have pierced ears". He was furious when he found out laugh

jac379: The three variables were white hand, black hand and hand with a tattoo. Every other condition was the same.

Was it an assumption or was it a true fact that controlable? How about one simple little variable like the tattoo, did they have exactly the same tattoo?
(sorry I didnt read the whole article).
From my experience, I found that one of big problems in statistics is when an assumption is applied.

jac379: While the researchers weren't made aware of the potential buyers race,

Hmm.. I think the findings would be more representative if both selected seller and buyer "population" were clearly described/defined.

But in general, this is an interesting reading, jac379! wine

"Only the vigilant can maintain their liberties, and only those who are constantly and intelligently on the spot can hope to govern themselves effectively by democratic procedures. A society, most of whose members spend a great deal of their time not on the spot, not here and now and in the calculable future, but somewhere else, in the irrelevant other worlds of sport and soap opera, of mythology and metaphysical fantasy, will find it hard to resist the encroachments of those who would manipulate and control it."

Obstinance_Works: And I like how they use the word "discrimination" instead of the words "judgement" to manipulate people into thinking there's anything at all wrong with this.

that's what the media does try to tell us that there is something wrong and just buy their product to fix things.
