When I was at Mt Hotham just after the Aust Day, I went to the Information Centre to ask about fires in the area as I wanted to take the road down to Dargo. The info they printed (something about the website only allows a printout) warnings for the Region. It said that the nearest was near Ensay. I said "Holy Barnicles, Batman. I know a guy down that way."
"No mucking furries" the lovely lady replied. "It is just an alert and watch."
Consider that this was 2 weeks ago, and The Grampians was a bit earlier, it does make you think that a lot of these fires do burn for a considerable time before they become a major problem.
Fires just north of Melb resulted in a lot of people evacuating to Kilmore, only to be evacuated a few hours later from there. 20 homes destroyed. Although a few tried to evacuate but were turned back due to the fires posing a direct threat. But did eventually manage to save their properties with "minor" losses.

Yeah they can take weeks to work there way around, even after they been contained ("!") stumps burn for yonks etc and whippy the right wind comes along and half the mountains are lit up.
I noted the Firefighter over Buchan way took the day off yesterday, wouldn't want to be within miles of the flare up yesterday meee thinks.
Just spent this evening purchasing a fire pump would you believe, now think maybe i purchased wrong sort (well sort of) has 50mm inlet and 2x 40mm outlet + 1x 50mm outlet. mee thinks i brought wrong type of pump!!!!eeerrrr Anyway committed so went and brought 2" suction and 30mt 1.5" flat hose with nozzle etc...hopefully the setup would wash meee wagon at least
Hope what i did tonight will put more water out than my peter??
1:22pm February 11, 2014 The largest fire, in the Snowy River National Park, is close to combining with another fire. Deputy State Controller Peter Rau says it looks like the 80,000-hectare Goongerah-Deddick Trail blaze and the 30,000-hectare Buchan-Jacksons Crossing Track fire will join.
The fires in far East Gippsland have already burnt more than 130,600 hectares between the Snowy River and the NSW border.
Orbost incident controller Ross Williamson said 11 homes were lost on Sunday.

big pumps are alright if you have plenty of water . Inch canvas hose that are wet are best I think . There is a lot of weight in a big hose ,moving fast is important . Did a fire control few years back with another district rural fire . I was the bug that day on one side of a ridge . Pounced around block with lighter at full tit . Of on the edge I noticed other turkeys had their 100 mm plastic hoses out ,dumb fec's ,called to the jokers "sleeping " on the dam ."Move ya hoses " as the could have with drawn them down hill if they had all pulled , not those guys ,to smart . Later offered a pile of burnt hoses , nar thanks don't like side loading hoses . Stick to the canvas hoses ,may be a hassel drying them but they last a fire ....mostly as they need water hehehe .

will do , bigger you get the more problem . That looks like a knitted hose but did not mention what it was made from that I saw . Most water is wasted so smaller = less waste . Two people on a 1 inch hose is always better than one man on a two inch . gota go

that's an 1.5" 40mm which is the pump outlet size, the 1" outlet pump hoses are much cheaper e.g. why i said i made mistake, because could have purchased 1.5" 40mm suction with 1" delivery hose and would have been $1.00 in my door cheaper as well as, further saving on suction and delivery hoses

I was doing some work with the 'clean-ups' after Black Saturday with the Land Rover Club of Victoria. One of the few properties that "survived" had done a lot of work in being able to 'defend' the property. He lost a few/many $1,000s of vehiciles but the home was saved. Sprinkler systemon top of the roof worked fine until....
A pump had been installed between the 2 concrete water tanks. Unfortunately (as the guy learnt) there was some spare fuel stored next to the pump. The superheat exploded the fuel and destroyed the pump and the poly pipes. Luckily for them, the worst was the vehicles and the pump being destroyed. Their home was missed.
If the delivery system is not "protected" it does not matter what suction/delivery system you have.
But with a smaller outlet than inlet, pressure delivered may make a difference.
There are three pine trees near the cottage, they were my main motivation to do something hopefully constructive towards defending what little i process. i agree smaller outlet than inlet hopefully more powerful than my peter
