epirb: Best years would be 03-05 running feral here with my two sons . Living off the point of a knife . Picking up tea on the way home from school meant nailing something ,wriggle meat . If it was not wriggling when put in a pot or pan then it was not fresh fresh .Rain in the morning two wet to bike out to school had us after pork in the arvo . No TV taught the boys to read and write one is a published author . Worst time was when my darling not too much X wife decided she wanted to gather up the kids again . Custody battle ,which I lost with one child , combined thousands were spent . Then the mother of my children received both a promotion and an ultimatum from her current ,either he goes or I go . I can recite the phone message telling me to pick up the child .
I would say pig hunting were the best memories of my childhood,me my brother and my old man spending the weekend smelling gunpowder. grin

Newlife08: The best years for me were in my twenties when I worked for a UK based travel company and I was paid to be based in Spain and the Greek Islands!

Had the time of my life, good job, good friends, great money, great boyfriend, worked hard but played even harder

And I knew at the time that it was a job that I could only do at that age - single without kids?

Worst years have to be when I got divorced. Went on for way too long and sucked the life force out of me. Dealing with a person who was domineering, bombastic, and angry sent me to the wall - almost. I made a promise to myself that whatever happened I would not let it defeat me. It made me crawl back up every time I was kicked down - but I got there

Hindsight is a beautiful thing - but something we don't have at the time?
I never imagined you as someone livig on the fast lane.wine

Abagail: It's interesting that I look at what others would consider the worst years of my life with a easy sort of reflection. Being homeless, being beaten, being unsure of where I was heading in life... I found that they were the most defining, so whilst others might say they were bad... I believe they were the better years.
yes the vantage points which to reflect back on are in the attitude of the person living them. wine

From reading peoples responses it seems to me that:

the best years are defined when gaining PEOPLE onto our lives. Finding a partner, having children, meeting friends danceline

the worst years are defined when losing those PEOPLE. Divorce, custody battles etc.

I find it comforting to know that relationships with PEOPLE still have the most profound affect on our experiences in life rather than material gain or our status in life, and this is how it should be. hug

I wasn't that upset at the times things occurred either, Ajax... Whenever I struggled with something, I always believed in the silver lining. I believe I have a natural optimism... which may be turning into natural cynicism as I get older. laugh

humans don't function all that well as a single unit especially in the last quarter of their life. Years ago we lived in very large family units, grand parents, parents and kids, sometimes even uncles...etc

today we are left alone especially if your kids live in other states or countries.

A thought crossed my mind.grin Do you think your experience is a wasted experience? I mean some people who have lived through traumatic years devote some of their time in helping others overcome difficult situation why haven't you?A sincere questions.

from my experience AA you dont have to physically be at the front helping individuals. Sometimes just living our life is the greatest asset you can give.

If people know of your story they can gain inspiration. Or even just your attitude with dealing with people without any prior knowledge can change attitudes.

Do you know of many people who can walk into a waiting room at any Children's Hospital and not be affected? Very few walk out without something of their psyche being changed.

I agree with Abigail, sometimes the worst things in your life can turn out to be the best, it is how you deal with the worst that can find the best in most things.

AgentAjax: so you are hoping for more best and worse years of your life.

For sure AA, fluctuating emotions tell me there's still a shred of humanity left.
Without this I would be as sterile as those who question it.
The high of a future love and the low of seeing those I love die, this is life.
There's no control, take the ride. head banger
