I still remember a time when I went to see Aliens for the first time at the cinemas. There was this one bit that made me jump, (the scene in the lab with the Facehugger in the tube), and because I love the franchise, I went and saw it again. This time I sat right up the back, and when that bit came up I put my fingers in my ears. It was fantastic to see everybody in the cinema jump all at the same time
kennn: The Exorcist for sure, never saw so many people jump and scream in a theater.
It's funny, that my flatmate loves watching horror movies, but will not watch the Exorcist, simply for the fact that it's about possession. I think it's still one of the best horror movies about. I recommend watching this alone with all the lights out.
The Poseidon Adventure, while not necessarily outright frightening was a showcase for escalating anticipation of ... disaster, I left the movie theater with no fingernails!
anto_d1975: The Thing, that head with legs running across the floor scared the hell out of me
I remember watching that when I was growing up. Had the house to myself, and would have to be the first movie that got me thinking about aliens, and the possibilities of them living here on Earth. I haven't seen the new version of the Thing, but I did love the Kurt Russell one the best.

What is it about putting fingers in ears but still watching? I've done it all my life
The Shining The Ring
and when I was 14 or 15, the first Mad Max movie scared the crap out of me
In response to: What is the scariest movie you've seen? Does it still scare you? Why?
So hard to think of one, i don't think i'm easily scared !...hmm Hellraiser, i think the original Hostel there was a couple of moments i got a real fright...hmmm
I didn't find "The Shining" to be scary at all in fact none of Steven Kings movies are scary to me.
The original "The Thing" was scary when I saw it as a kid but with time I've come to appreciate just what a well made movie that was for realism. I especially liked the dialog how it resembled the way people converse In real life by talking over each other instead of the perfect choreographed banter most movies present.
Am not a fan of Horror films but I remember being absolutely terrified of Freddy Kruger and not sleeping for days
Silence of the Lambs freaked me out, the bit where Clarice is at the killers house and the rest of the FBI are at an empty house! The way it was shot was amazing as you think she has back up and then realise NOOOOOOOOOOO

It was one of the "Halloween" ones--a mask company designs Halloween masks that detonate the wearer's head when a commercial 'jingle' is played on television. In one scene, a store owner who is in that particular town to pick up her order notices the device, which has fallen off the mask she has taken back to her motel room. She fiddles with it using a pick or nail file, and it fries her like there's no tomorrow. The scene still freaks me out. FYI--I'm not usually a horror movie watcher. This one took the cake!!
