I left a family get together prematurely because an overbearing in law invited themselves along and got up my nose.

Removing yourself from the situation was most likely the best course of action
Thanks Serene, just upset me a bit as I only see my son occasionally and this person sees them all the time. Would have just liked a get together without this person having to be the center of attention and take over the visit.

I'm sorry your Sunday turned bad, especially after you were probably looking forward to seeing your son if you don't see him that often.
I only had one in law I really liked and that was my mother in law. The rest of them used to grate on my nerves if I spent any amount of time with them.
Better to have left than anything be said that can't be taken back. I'm sure your son will understand :)
