I have an xp os lap top lent to me by mate, the os on my fried lap top is 7
as 7 is recognised by my mobile phone.. how can I make that hard drive the primary hard drive.. also my win 7 has my office 2010 required for college. - mind you come to think of it - if it has less than 512mb ram its not going to run 7 properly.. I am thinking I might need to upgrade the ram - and omg it has 20gb of hard drive, but its a nice machine..lol

Unless you are moving from one make/model to the same make/model,it won't work, you would need to reinstall Win 7 once you have transferred the old hard drive to the new laptop, otherwise none of the drivers needed would work correctly.
You will need your original Win 7 bootable CD, boot up from that and then reinstall following the instructions so that you keep your old files, if you do a clean install it will wipe the drive and you lose everything, so beware!!!!

Try downloading this first, it will tell you if your machine is capable of running Win7 and if not what you will need to make it do so if possible.

Its a microsoft program from their knowledge base..

What mobile phone do you have?
And what version of that os is loaded?
I have xp pro on one laptop and win 7 on the other.
I am able to interface with either one.

Oh and there MIGHT be one wee pesky problem before you even start, some of the older laptops used an IDE Hard drive and most of the recent ones used SATA hard drives and even newer than that have SSD (Solid State Drives).

What this means is if your drives have different ends at the rear then they are not going to be able to physically connect (plug in) to the motherboard on your older laptop, however I have seen adapters on the market that might help circumvent this issue.

Hi DJ, what do you think? I dont know the Australian market on laptops but here it would be more expensive to piece one together and trying to make the other ready for 7 and the cost of the os seems like it would be a very expensive venture. I picked up a "like new" Hp with win 7 and original disks and a whole lot of great new interfaces and faster processor with more ram then my xp laptop could even accept. ( my xp) lap has 2 gig mem now. I picked up the HP with a 5i for 250.00 usd. I am totally happy with it and I use the xp for my lighter tasks. And I always backup onto a external network drive. I also have a xp desktop also maxed with 2 gig mem and a older p4 processor. they are all networked and I get around pretty good. But that HP for 250 and I know that I saw others for under 200, so if that is doable in the Market the OP has to work with would you agree that might be a less expensive way to go and also more effective?
wink

Agreed, there are really cheap machines out there already preloaded with Win7 and it is a more cost effective way of going about things.
Laptops and indeed desktops are coming down in price in a big way because the mobile computing trend (smartphones and tablets) are now lead the market in computing sales and companies that manufacture desktops and laptops have had to drop their prices hugely to remain competitive.

Ebay Aus has laptops running Win7 from $160.00 I just had a look...

I wasn't sure to really say being I am quite far away. But not surprised. And it is a good thing. There was a inversion that occurs in the graph that I had seen many years ago, over 10. And I forgot the name but I lol.. I was in that point where I was spending amounts that today just seem impossible but other than making it very hard to continue building computers for individuals (unless very specialized) became not so profitable as the larger boys were mass producing for far less than I could compete with and still profit. But still it is nice that I can affiord to build things at a fraction of the cost then before. (for myself)
aww! this thread wont let me post the graph. I can not seem to send you a mail. mine is clear though if you send me something I can reply. Thanks for the clarification DJ.

thumbs up

the dinosaur is running on IDE AND FAT 32

I have upgraded the ram - tried 1gb, but then I started having system problems and it kept freezing, now running on 512mb.. very slow and very painful...

I tried to boot off the old hard drive that has os 7, but it doesn't recognise the drivers for acer, as it has all the drivers for the other fried laptop (toshisba)...

THANKYOU TO ALL!! WHO HAVE RESPONDED... my new laptop should be here in a few weeks, so in the meantime I will just make do with the dinosaur for the time being...

Never realised that I could access Office online through onedrive (old skydrive)until a member of au forums sent me a link.. now I can do my homework...

If you still use that obsolete M$ office, to avoid incompatibilities with older or other office apps, use ISO standardized OpenDocument Format *.odt etc. documents.

That's a bit unfair, first, MS Office is not obsolete, second, MS Word is the worlds biggest selling word processing software, thirdly Microsoft is an ISO certified company.

I personally dislike Microsoft products but think it is incorrect to mislead people with false facts!
