serene56: Thanks Jem, yeah it's a great place, so much to do and see

ah was with the ex, his idea of seeing a place was to virtually blink and go, there you are you have seen it!

We actually did a lot while we were there, but really didnt stop to appreciate what was to be enjoyed.

I could have sat and watched the harbour for a lot more than 5 mins!

Newie is a place on the must visit again list

Funny you should say that, I thought to myself today while having lunch that you tend to take in a whole lot more when your travelling solo confused

At the same time a distraction is always rather nice giggle

always nice to have someone to share the moment with you.

still, one of my most memorable moments traveling was sitting on the pier at Swansea Tasmania, just drinking in the view of the Freyinet. Could have stayed there a lot longer but I still had 40kms to cycle to camp!

it was true soul food

Bit of both don't you think? Solo you don't have anyone to please but yourself....... but then again having a chat about what you are seeing, doing, going to do is good too? hug handshake wine

serene56: To Newcastle Today I caught a choo choo train up to Newcastle It's about an hour up the coast from where I live and it was a brilliant day out

In the planning process, I wasn't sure whether to do the heritage/cultural thing or the scenic/nature thing so I did both

"Newcastle is one of Australia's oldest and most interesting cities. Containing a quirky blend of new and old architecture, a rich indigenous history, a working harbour and fabulous beaches, Newcastle is known as unique and eclectic. The land and waters of Newcastle are acknowledged as the country of the Awabakal and Worimi peoples, whose culture is celebrated in community events, place naming, signage and artworks."

Took a few pics to share with you, I hope you like them

I lived in Newcastle when I was a wee girl for a couple of years before I headed bush I lived in Charlestown and I went to school there Kindy my first ever school I had fond memories of living there. My last visit was 1977 to say goodbye to rellies as I was leaving Sydney to go live in Perth. daisy

kidatheart: Ooooh, a '25 T, I have a couple that look a little rougher than that, but still rebuildable.

Thanks Gran, I'm excited once again.

I think it is a bit earlier than that. About 1917 they had tin radiators when the USA Army ordered them from Ford. That doesn't look like a tin radiator.

I was at Corowa Swim-in & ex-Military Vehicles last weekend and they had a 1914 model and a 1920 model with the different radiators. Might even be some pictures of the them on the KVA website (ps, I am in the 1926 Dodge 4th in the parade). Both T-models have been restored to full working condition and managed the parade ... almost. I did have to jump out and push one when he stopped after stalling it. And then shortly after lost his few electrics.

The history of Newcastle is very interesting. There were many short voyages done from Sydney to see what there was around the area. They discovered coal not long after settlement and it was an extension of the original Penal Colony. It was considered a death sentence to many convicts. Many convicts died there digging for coal.

A road link to Sydney Town was built after Mr Wiseman established a ferry at what is now known as Wiseman's Ferry (good pub there for when you are waiting). And the road the convicts built was known as The Great North Road ... I have been driven along a good portion of it but now just limited to pedestrian traffic after all those Toybota drivers mucked up the road.

serene56: 1920 model I think Wash

Maybe...the colour of the radiator suggested to me an earlier model. Although the rounded bonnet does suit a later model. The trouble is that people do things to vehicles (okay, not these days) to keep vehicles going.

It can be hard. I have a Series 2a Land Rover bulit in September 1971 for the Australian Army.
---- IMAGE REMOVED because photobucket.com no longer allows embedded images ----

I showed up the Cowora Swim-in & ex-Miltary event and get questioned about it "2a" I say. "It has headlights in the guards" (UK requirement around 1969). "Does not have the cut-offs under the headlights. Must be a Series 3"

Simply fact is that the last of the Series 2a Army vehicles had to have the parking lights and "Blackout lights" on the front of the vehicle.

Mate went to buy a "genuine 1948 Land Rover." Turned out to be a 1954 model with bits and pieces taken from other vehicles.
