wash2u: Once knew a guy from Mt Hagon who was the son of a tribal chief. He ended up very high in the Commonwealth Bank (PNG) and later their national bank. Back in the mid 70s, he got married to someone from a neighbouring village/tribe and she came with a very large dowry, by their standards. Trying to remember what it was (old timers is not working so good today) ---- something like 10 pigs, 3 cassowaries, numerous woven baskets woven trays and bilums (carry bags).
He came down to visit us not long after and presented mum & me with some trays and bilums. My brother now has the the 2 trays while I have the 2 bilums. My bilum was very traditional but mum's was very special as it has seashells attached. Mt Hagon is in the middle of PNG and very high up in the mountains, a long way from the ocean.
I use mine when I go away as it it expands and I can fit in my toiletries and change of clothes when I hit the showers in a public place.
My girls price is only 3 pigs, 1 Cassowary and all the assorted nick knacks that there are at a wedding, she's fron near Lae. Were not going to do the traditional style wedding until later on, instead get married in their local chapel and have a reception at her place with the relo's and friends. Difference between the daughter of a tribal chief and the son of a tribal chief. Even so, she (and possibly you) is highly thought of.
My mother is a greedy old cow that has never worked for anyone but her husbands, she was left allot of money by her father before she met my dad.
After my parents devorce she was cracked onto by a cleaning salesman, so she poored all her money into his business and has never offered me a job, even when I was down and out.
Now she is dying and I don't want one red cent off her even after she dies.
I am big enough and smart enough to make my own legacy, she repeatedly beat me as a child and I will never forgive her.
Is that what she knows?
