My mother was recently diagnosed with congestive heart failure. My gran also had this. I used to cook for her, but cooking meals for mom is a tad different. She has a much more adventurous palate, and as per most of my family, loves food. And though I have worked as a cook and currently work as a butcher, I am looking for better footing when it comes to her dietary needs via what others have found to work. We are already looking into items she loves and thinking of changes there.

But as I said, I welcome the experience of others. What has worked for you or a loved one? Maybe a few recipes that might work, they just need a tweaking (I'm not too bad at that)? Any products you have found that help a lot, or advice you've gleaned? Thank you to all who reply and offer some advice. I greatly appreciate it. hug ~ Aly

P.S. We are omnivores, but mom isn't against eating vegan recipes (not big on tofu). But really, any recipe is pretty much welcome......and most especially if there are some good sweets that work for heart healthy diets. Thanks again teddybear

My mother passed away with CHF.... there are so many ways to answer your question, which is going to be so varied, from different people. And as you probably know... what might work for one person, may not be the answer for someone else.

My suggestion would be to Google your question.Use keywords to what you are searching for... there, I'm sure you will retrieve tons of ideas....

Good luck, and God bless you and yours.

I found it helpful to develop a taste for all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables, avoiding canned foods but accepting a lot of frozen. Avoid all types of processed and junk food completely. I wont even eat ground beef unless I grind it. Unless you love the new food you're not going to stick to it, in my case.

Best wishes.

That's a good point. We are working on what she likes to eat raw and what she likes cooked. Some things that I know are awesome we will have to get creative with.

As for the ground beef, I'm a butcher so we don't have that problem, luckily.

Thank you so much. I had to shift gears for her. Since as I said my gran had this, but mom has different goals to focus on in regards to her health. In the end it's all the same over all goal. I'll look into google, but I'm not expecting to find too much more then I have already encountered. Thank you again.

All the best
Not sure about your part of the world . But here in Australia you can see a dietician who can hopefully point you and your mum in the right direction . Here we have dieticians attached to public hospitals!

Seeing my diabetes was playing up my BP was out of control and my heart issues flared up again . It was suggested I see a dietician .
Tomorrow is a week that I have been on a high protein low fat low carb diet !!
Was surprised what I can eat for breakfast and of course what I shouldn't eat !!

Perhaps they may help you

Dietitians are available here. And when mom first found out about her diabetes we saw one. But I think dietitians are not covered by her insurance and she doesn't have the money to set up seeing one. Being in the US, many of the life style parts of medicine isn't always provided for once you leave the hospital or care home. And even then, they don't always provide the most ideal diets for their patents themselves.
