It is my deep rooted believe,if someone claims "atheist",and really
is a ""true atheists"",should not take part in any Christmas
celebrations,as to me,it looks as a mockery of his atheist believes.
Those claim atheist can find another day to celebrate,family reunion,family gathering,exchanging presents, decorating and in general all those activities,characteristic during Christmas.
I would suggest 1st of Jenuary,for atheists celebrations,instead for Christmas.
jac_the_gripper: It's my choice, just as celebrating, or not celebrating is other people's choice. It's got nothing to do with right, or wrong.

Why should it be your choice what other people do?

What difference does it make to you?

Why do you make assumptions about what other people believe because they appear to fit into the Atheism box? You have no idea of the individual belief systems of other people just because of a label.

I think you're being a bit anally retentive about this one, Chris. laugh

"Choice"!! and "difference" is your assumptions,not mine.
Christmas is merely a religious celebrations,with all inclusive,family gathering,exchange presents,and the rest happenings on Christmas day,and atheists,take part in celebration with a relious stamp.
The label makes the believe,or the believe the label???

Chris Neither I do agree with you on this one . I am atheist of my choice and i'm celebrating Christmas since 1979. Been grown up in italy with my step mum and I been always around a Christmas tree since a kid. My stepmum was married to my dad since 1978 and he was a muslim. So what do say he should'nt have celebrate Christmas cause he was muslim and my stepmum should'nt have celebrate the persian christmas/New year cause she is Christian?
Because she does.

Atheism may mean many different things to many different people, just as religion does.

Using a label doesn't mean everyone has identical fixed thoughts inside their heads.

I find it quite the mystery why there seems to be a mixing of religious culture and beliefs into secular life. Especially in America the Christmas tree and the rituals around it have nothing to do with one's religious beliefs. 2 separate concepts keep very far apart - it seems only in Europe and the East that there is a merging of one's religious thoughts and secular thoughts.

These are separate.

Just across the border in south korea they put up a massive xmas tree on top of a hill from where it can be seen for miles into the north....they say they want to send a message of goodwill to their neighbours....all they are succeeding in doing is infuriating the madmen who rule the north....

In USA like a whole lot of other things it is different for so many people...I can tell you that for some it is extremely sacred and for others it is all about the biggest and the best! The more gold and all. For many it is a great time to have many visitors and a lot of drinking and fun. For some it is a sad lonely time and they get a tree and somehow it just adds to the sadness but they are so deep in it they have no other way. There is nothing here that is mainstream..Of course I don't see the world through tv so I can not really speak about that. I just don't know. But I can say that not everyone watches that stuff. LOL..nooo wayy. ;-}

Hey! for some it is for the kids. And for others it is not part of their life at all. I will not have a tree. I do have a cat though. I just don't really see the point in having a tree..I have no friends or visitors so I will put up some nice wreaths on the doors..and some lights. That way people from the outside might get a good feeling from that. I might put reindeer antlers on the cat. "Papi" He is a pretty big cat. Well, that is a little bit of Christmas tree and religion (or not) stuff in case you didn't know. OH! probably at the big house there will be a tree...it looks good and there will be presents there. and most everyone in my family has their own ideas on what Christmas is about..but mostly will agree it is a time to come together no matter what you believe and bring good thoughts to one another.
;-}
