skippyguy: Hi all, Any advice on this topic is appreciated i'm looking to walk this
early September via flying into Newcastle, though i've heard it's easier to do it from west to east as it's an easier track to follow out of the
Bustle of Newcastle, has anyone here done this walk or know of others who have ?, its seems Newcastle could be a myriad of small streets and wrong turns to the uninitiated !

i spent some time in penrith (job in carlisle), not too far from hadrian's wall (by canadian measurements of travel...lol). as well, long meg's daughters is in the area. and not to far from there...lol...i saw some awesome nature art at Grizdale Forest Park in Cumbria (spectacular works by Sally Matthews).
Hope you have lots of time as there really is a lot to see and do.
awesome area.

thumbs up

jac_the_gripper: The best advice I can give you is to hire an interpreter.

i have traveled a bit, and thought i would do fine in northern england...

but i gotta say...lol..

i did learn an interpreter could be handy. my muffler fell off outside of penrith and i went to the garage and told the fellow there that i needed a new muffler...and no matter how many times i said, 'muffler'...he didn't understand till i crawled under the car and pointed to it. we really had a difficult time understanding each other and resorted to notes...
laugh
i then learned that in england the car has an exhaust pipe...not a muffler.

After working on an awful lot of British vehicles, I realised the silencer all too many of them need would be attached to a 9mm. Yanno, to put the damned thing out of it's misery. laugh

An exciting quest skip!

Funny though, that the 'wall' in parts is little more than crumbled little bits of masonry that you would step on and not notice unless someone pointed them out, much like the Great Wall of China I guess conversing

skippyguy: Thanks for this !
Yes i certainly love a bit of history :)

My other option i guess another friend suggested is flying into Carlisle on the west, then doing it west to east, do you ? or does anyone know about this place? it does seem simple getting to Newcastle though

Durham def seems like a look, which means cutting short my time in London by a day !

Yes i have plenty of waterproofs, sounds i could need a warm dry place at night ! i will be there early September so i hope for settled weather, but weather anywhere.....is always pot luck,

As for Slang, i know 80percent of that so as soon as Jac the *Gripper* fills me in with the rest i will be fine :):)

so then without me looking is Carlisle the closest to Bowness on Solway ?

Yeah if you're gonna do West East then Carlisle would be closest to Bowness on-Solway, you'd be back pedalling a little bit from Carlisle to get to Bowness and you'd probably have to go by bus. If you do East West from Newcastle you've got the Metro. Newcastle airport is about 12/15 miles out of the city so you could just get b&b up that way and miss Newcastle out, it all depends on if you want to do the wall end to end?

cheers

Well i figure 4 days worth is what i'm good for, i'm looking at leaving London around 8th September to start 9th (is Durham an option from London)
but time is becoming limited 9,10, 11, 12 , back in Newcastle 13 lunchtime issssh , then i fly out following day 14th lunchtime, but i figure i will Bus /Metro a wee way out of Newcastle then continue on the walk getting 30 miles done in one day , leaving about 50 miles in 3 days..and a bit, BUT if the weather turns crap the pace will increase noticeably....laugh
