after spending a day to write up a profile, the first question of a would be candidate is: 'So, tell me something about yourself'

Well, didn't I just do that in my profile?

And after seeing that yours only consists of only one line, isn't it your turn first?

And yes, I know if you dont like chatting on the internet with perfect strangers, what am I doing here, i know i know, but still,.......

my usual response is that I would be delighted to do so around a glass of wine and good cigar, but somehow that never works and the would be candidate quickly becomes an ex would be candidate.

Am I in the wrong place?

No, you are exactly where you want to be... And what you do here is your own business...
You put in your profile what you believe is enough to be read by strangers...
I often feel annoyed when asked what the hell I am doing on here if I don't want to chat to strangers...
But what to do, people rarely read the profiles... roll eyes

The cigar smoking and glass of wine wine sound rather appealing my friend.laugh

The amount of peeps who dont read the profiles seems surprisingly high..
I just cant fathom this,we all know most scammers dont bother reading profiles,,but when it comes to genuine members. dunno

I would think personally that if any one of us were genuinely interested in getting to know someone here, wouldnt it just be common sense to read theyre profiles and build up a better picture of said person before contacting them.

It seems a tad ignorant and presumptious to me,contacting someone without reading said profile first...
Perhaps..bouquet

Nah,...whatever place you want to be in,....that should work,...skip the wine and the cigar and ask her sheepishly to go see American Sniper or some other Brad Cooper flick,...and maybe she'll catch on to the Cooper look you have,....lol....cheers

Maybe a better question would be " Tell me more about you" ?

Or ask specific questions not mentioned in your profile.

Yes, you have that right,....just show a genuine interest in the other person,...a desire to get to know them as a person....

mollybaby: It is better if it waits until the 2nd or 3rd email at least Having said that, if my interest isn't piqued in the first email, there is no second or third.

So true....that is why I truly feel CS should instigate and promote "video profiles!!!" lol

Exactly this! thumbs up

Read the profile first. I get messages were I know they didn't read my profile. They say, I'd like to get to know you, I think we have so much in common. Before I reply back I look at their profile and realize we don't. My profile says Spiritual But Not Religious, yet I still get interest from Christians. I've got nothing against Christians, or any other religion for that matter. But for most Christians, if your not of the faith, that's a deal breaker.

Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

My thoughts exactly.
I always read a profile and try to form an idea of how and who that person is.

if the profile sucks or does not agree with me, no point in writing.

Exactly,...thus the video parody! I do not need to "hear" a sunset to know it is beautiful,...I do not need to "see" or :hear a rose to know it is beautiful,...and deny me my sight, my hearing, my sense of smell, but place a kitten in my hands and I will sense its beauty,....its all about just leaving yourself open to getting to know someone,...including ones self! :-)

I don't think many are as in touch with their senses and awareness as that.
