Being fickle and indecisive I wouldn't rule out a girl changing her mind or allowing you to do that for her. Plenty of girls come back when they see you making less effort, or better yet, see you with someone younger and more attractive.
Men are different. Men don't like a girl more because she's now with the captain of the football team, the boyfriend is irrelevant.

She's the one to arouse my interest, it's her I notice. The boyfriend is a disappointment for men with orthodox views on not sleeping with a man's girlfriend and a deterrent to snakes. He doesn't matter beyond that. You'd look good with or without a bloke standing next to you.
