KNenagh: There is always fighting with the Kurds (South-Eastern area) and that will go on.
There was a coup planned in 2010 but that didn't go ahead. The last coup before that was in 1980, that's a while ago.
I do hope that they get rid of Erdogan (hopefully without bloodshed) and I have no idea how they will solve the civil war with the Kurdish population.
Erdogan is a controversial figure who promotes religion amongst his priorities.. He is very backward in his thinking & i believe this coup came about as a result of the military & there supporters demanding stricter policies on terrorism & a more westernised culture.
Aragorn11: Well you'd know far more about it. I just hope it's not to install Gulen.
Most Turkish people I know only go to Turkey for their holidays. I know Turks through school and (my brother's) work, haven't met any Kurds though. Can't remember ever discussing Turkish politics tbh. (just never came up)
mollybaby: If it is army v. police, which it seems to be, that won't end without bloodshed.
Nope, have just seen some pics of police trying to arrest some army guys. The Police have called on the people to take to the streets thru their official Twitter account.

Ok, I thought with your background you would have a much better handle on the situation than I, and prob still do

I know, I wouldn't be one bit sad to see Erdogan go. He isn't popular with a lot of Turks living in Germany. But his party even increased their seats and got an absolute majority in the last election. I hope he'll be gone, but I would prefer if that would happen by a democratic election and not civil war.

colin53: with respect, I doubt the numbers you say are right, I must say I am not taking any sides here to be honest,
Im not taking sides either but I knew a a Kurdish political freedom fighter who quoted me figures through evidence.. He was later assassinated here in England by Turks for his outspoken views..

Over 20 years ago in school maybe (if we would have bothered) - went to the only girls school in town to do my leaving and we had a big percentage of foreign girls, the majority of them Turkish.
We were one crew but topic was general girls stuff and not politics, neither German or Turkish.
I did see protests on German TV before the last Turkish general election. Erdogan came to Germany that time and some were big into supporting him, but a lot were very vocal against him.
Just looked at a German newssite - there are reports Erdogan wants to get asylum in Germany.

Democracy is not so common in turkey.. Corruption seems more appropriate a word to describe the their political system.
lifeisadream: Then present the right numbers in either side and what ever the numbers are they are a disgrace to humanity.
all loss of innocent lives is a disgrace, the present leader of Turkey is a disgrace, lets hope this all changes for the good of all who live in that country, I say as ex military myself. war is an inhumanity.

I read that as well and also the UK. Who the hell knows whats going on. Reports that he is in an airplane as we speak.
Twitter have released a statement saying they are not blocked in the country but there has been a noticeable slowdown in traffic.

Turkey is and will be a powder keg until they have sorted out their problems with the Kurds (can't see that happening) and do actually work on their human rights situation.

Yes, and they are geographically very strategically placed, which makes it even more important.
