They want to continue to be a democratic country

Even those who despise Erdogan and his policies, did not agree with the coup, because it was seen as a blow against democracy.

Erdogan was elected by the people, and it is up to the people to get rid of him at the next election.

A dear friend of mine has been banned from leaving the country.
She is a cancer research scientist and like hundreds of thousands of highly educated Turkish citizens, she is forbidden to travel out of the country. Thousands of teachers are fired, hundreds of schools closed...
But how far Erdogan's ambitions are set to go...?
The new presidential residence is a palace worth 600 million dollars.
Turgut Yozal, the former president has said that 21 century have to be the "Turkish century", and the premier Suleiman Demirel spoke about a "Turkish world" between the Adriatic and the Great Chinese wall.
Well, how ambitious that sounds?

Relations between supporters and opponents of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan living in Switzerland are under strain in the wake of last week’s failed coup, according to Swiss papers.

An estimated 120,000 people with Turkish roots currently live in Switzerland.

Citing various social media platforms, the 20 Minutes free newspaper suggests an online witch hunt may be underway.

“Erdogan supporters have launched appeals on Facebook and Whatsapp to report on regime dissidents,” the newspaper reported.

An Erdogan supporter declared in an online post: “Together we can storm the caves of coup supporters. Who doesn’t want to denounce these terrorists and traitors to the nation?”

In another, a supporter of the ruling AK Party called for the closure of the Zurich school founded in 2009 by the Gülen movement. Fethullah Gülen, 75, has been blamed for masterminding the July 15 attempted coup, in which at least 232 people were killed. He denies any involvement.

The split between the reclusive US-based Muslim cleric and Erdogan had divided the Turkish community in Switzerland three years ago.

Overnight, some friends stopped talking to each other, Zurich historian Cebrail Terlemez told Swiss public radio, SRF.

“The events in Turkey affect Turkish citizens in Switzerland. Even if everyone is happy that the coup is over, the polarisation is getting worse,” said Terlemez, who is a member of the Gülen movement.

Kurdish concerns

Many Kurds live in Switzerland and in the past they have not hesitated to make their voices heard on Swiss streets. But today they are worried about the long arm of president Erdogan.

“This time the Kurds are more cautious,” Basel parliamentarian Edibe Gölgeli, who is of Kurdish origin, told the Basellandschaftliche Zeitung newspaper.

“Today is not a good time to take to the streets to protest against Erdogan’s policies,” Gölgeli said. The Kurds also condemn the attempted coup, she added. “Erdogan must be removed from power by the democratic path.”

She fears, however, that civil war could break out in Turkey, which would result in many Turks fleeing their country.

Meanwhile, it is realistic to imagine a rise in the number of requests for asylum from Turkey, said Kurt Fluri from the centre-right Radical Party in Der Bund paper.

Requests must be carefully examined, he said, “whether that pleases Erdogan or not”.

In the same article, Andreas Glarner from the conservative right Swiss People’s Party, who is known for his tough position on asylum, said there was no reason to grant asylum to anyone behind the coup.

“Erdogan is a democratically elected president,” he said.

This weekend several hundred pro-Erdogan demonstrators protested peacefully in front of the Turkish consulate in Zurich to express their joy at the failure of the coup.

Seems everybody is tiptoeing around the "Master"... dunno

Erdogan has announced he fears another coup and therefor the army will be structurally reshuffled and "new blood" added to it.
He also says that the State of emergency could be prolonged until he makes sure every single supporter of the coup is eliminated, it will give him power to introduce new laws and stop any rights and freedoms without the Parliament. uh oh

Erdogan has been practically "ruling" this country for the last 13 years, a law has been changed, so he can become Prime minister in 2003.
If anybody thinks it will be easy to just elect someone else, better think again...

The president has always been elected by the Parliament in Turkey. With a referendum in 2011 that has been changed.
And Erdogan was the first President elected by the people in 2014.
A coup just two years later (mandate is 5 years) is an indication for a serious problem.

TheRedSquirrel87: In essence Erdogan's supporters are not that different to Trump's or Brexit's or the Black supporters of BLM... The bright and educated don't live sustainably when they become liberal and free, that should be common knowledge. These people are being overwhelmed everywhere where there are or were liberal values.

And we know how his most distinguished supporters are: Obama, Merkel, Juncker......our "creme de la creme"

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan pledged to overhaul the army in response to last week's failed coup, a sign that a newly imposed state of emergency would be used to press on with a purge that has alarmed the West.

In a sign of Turkey's dismissal of outside criticism over how it has responded to the coup, the justice minister said Turkey would not bow to pressure from the European Union to rule out restoring the death penalty to execute the plotters.

Western countries backed Turkey's government during last week's failed putsch, but are increasingly worried about Turkey's subsequent crackdown against thousands of members of the security forces, judiciary, civil service and academia.

On Wednesday Erdogan announced a state of emergency, a move he said would allow the government to take swift action against those who plotted the coup that killed more than 246 people and wounded more than 2,100 before it collapsed within hours.

The possibility of Turkey bringing back capital punishment for the plotters has put further strain on Ankara's relationship with the EU, which Turkey seeks to join but which demands candidates forego the death penalty.

Turkey outlawed capital punishment in 2004 as part of its bid to join the bloc and European officials have said backtracking on that would effectively put an end to the EU accession process. But crowds at rallies have demanded the coup plotters be executed, and the government says it must at least consider it.

"People demand the death penalty and that demand will surely be assessed. We have to assess that demand from the standpoint of law, and not according to what the EU says," Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag told broadcaster CNN Turk.

Western governments worry about instability and human rights in the country of 80 million, which plays an important part in the U.S.-led fight against Islamic State and in the European Union's efforts to stem the flow of refugees from Syria.

Erdogan accuses Fethullah Gulen, a charismatic U.S.-based cleric, of masterminding the plot against him. In a crackdown on Gulen's suspected followers, more than 60,000 soldiers, police, judges, civil servants and teachers have been suspended, detained or placed under investigation.

In an interview with Reuters late on Thursday, Erdogan compared the Gulen movement to a cancer and said he would restructure the military to give it "fresh blood".
