It was probably a plague as it rendered all other hominid species (the'clay' we were made from) totally extinct and in less than 10,000 years reduced the world wide number of breeding human pairs on Earth from a quartermillion to about 2,000 or less. 40,000 oor so years later our numbers had recovered enough so Mespotamia and Sumeria could be buiit and we could begin the climb back to civilization again.
