mykingdomforanam: How would you rescue somebody from a killer whale that's in the water, without harming the person?
To be honest, I'm not sure how do you stop such a large animal once it attacks. But if the risk of getting attacked exists then prolly isnt a good idea in the first place. Animals kept in small places tend to get aggressive over time.

Len05: because they don't have whale guns at the ready.
bullets and water don't mix well. aiming and water don't mix well. you don't want to shoot the trainer.
it is not easy to kill a whale. you can't even drag them to land, they die slowly
I supposed some sort of crossbow with sedatives could be created. But these are all things that should be examined by the people that work there. Not by me. I aint no weapons expert.

mykingdomforanam: I'll jump in the water.
If the orca spits out the trainer and attacks me, lasso the trainer, and pull her out.
I'll try to out swim it.
If the orca doesn't spit out the trainer, and attacks me too... tell my wife I loved her.
The idea of you in this water rodeo rescue described above is kinda funny. But if you look at the vid Guzman posted you can see no much if anything was done to help the woman. I mean why didnt someone at least tried to distract her. Get its attention somehow away from the woman.

lisaj77: I really shouldnt, but i'm gonna.. have you read anything about these whales in captivity? Too shallow pools, what the trainers do to these animals just to get them to procreate? Go onto the Sea Shepherd site and read a bit.. you might gain some empathy for these mammals.
I'm not saying animals in captivity don't suffer. I know about the broken teeth from biting the sides of the pool, the deformities caused by the small pool, the annoying loud sounds that stresses the animal during the performance. I suppose the best thing to do is to educate children now so the next generation wont even consider going to see these shows.

lisaj77: Daniela my family had the hardest time keeping me away from joining SS... I think they were not in the mood to jail me out of some prison for being too much of an activist.. yeah, I don't do any animal movies.. I made the horrible mistake of trying to watch The Cove..
Those animals should never be held in captivity to begin with. They are wild animals and anyone who works with wild animals have to accept the fact they will sometimes behave like wild animals.

not just wild animals. even parrots, unless hand reared and tamed, spend their entire lives in fear of their owners. I certainly do not want to spend 60 years being afraid of being eaten. which is what we do them.
SeaWorld Entertainment said Thursday that the killer whales currently living at its facilities will be its last as it will stop breeding them immediately and phase out theatrical orca shows.
The move comes nearly three years after SeaWorld came under pressure for its treatment of killer whales and their trainers in the documentary Blackfish. The company had already announced plans to end killer whale shows at its San Diego park following regulatory scrutiny in California.
SeaWorld will turn its attention to "new, inspiring, natural orca encounters" with educational programs emphasizing enrichment, exercise and health with its remaining killer whales, CEO Joel Manby said on a conference call.
The orca shows will end in San Diego in 2017, while the San Antonio and Orlando parks will end the shows by 2019.
Suspenders: How come that when a killer whale/ orca attacks a trainer/ staff no one does anything about it? Don't these people have rights too?
When a child fell into the pit of a gorilla in a zoo, the animal was shot to death to protect the boy. But when a member of Sea World or whatever gets attacked no one cares. They pretty much leave them to die a horrible, painful and agonizing death.
How much does a human life costs? And how much is a whale's net worth?
There can never be true caring when money and profit is all people crave for.
I know right
They should call in one of those Japanese companies that specialises in hunting and killing whales in the Southern Pacific Ocean
For "scientific purposes', you know ..
Problem solved ~ Willy gets his comeuppance and Japanese restaurants get their orders filled future audiences will no longer have to view such slaughter

On the other hand of course ... we could simply stop imprisoning wild creatures for our amusement ?
Serious answer though ... The Union of Orca's has a massive cash fund, pays for great lawyers and gets the matter dismissed at the pretrial hearing.
Never ever put mammals animals etc away from their environment, no captivity! Unless they are endangered and human intervention is a must. Usually that is because humans are swiping down their home land.
No need to be defensive ... can't argue that some good has come from zoos ... yet one might well ask also ask
" At what cost to the individual animal's "
and Im sure you and I could have a robust debate about that and remain on good terms ?
In simplest terms ( and I was being over simplistic in that earlier reply ) IF we didn't keep animals in zoos THEN no humans would ever get killed !
But let me be devil's advocate for a moment and put forward an interesting PoV
" IF Man was really interested in conserving wild life ( lions, elephants and rhino etc etc ) THEN the fastest most sure method would be to breed those species for human food ..."
Have't read your links yet but I'll try to make time later !

a whale brings much more money ...long story short, all zoos and
aquariums should be closed ...
I agree no more zoos with the excuse of educating the kids about animals.
No more kidnapping and trading of wild animals for entertainment.
