lifeisadream: There are some natural reserves around the globe that allow natural-wild life to develop.

Douglas Tompkins co-founder of the brand North Face (who died in a kayak accident due to hypothermia) had lots of land to be kept in their natural status and now his widow is donating 400,000 ha in the Patagonia area to the Chilean gov for natural reserves-parks.

The problem is that we are too many for the current cycling process of the world's energy.

He is (was) American, so there is hope.

pat8lanips: I'd like to be the guy that fluffed the last white rhino, to get a sample for a groundbreaking research project that brings them back from the brink of extinction. Then there can be a giant bronze statue of me in Trafalgar square, during the exact moment of the procedure. So lifelike, you can see his lips trembling and his hooves all curling up.

Where does the statue of you doing a member of the royal family go?

unlaoised: I think you underestimate a lot of people. Nobody I know wants to be the one to "kill the last white rhino". On the contrary, they're desperate to save them....but those are the people I relate to, so it's relative.

It is just unbelievable what we humans are doing in one way or another and we all add to the "pushing" of other species to extinction yet some are top predators and those are the ones that would kill the last specimen of any given specie.

Here, I do see people selling exotic-rare birds and the authorities do nothing but as along as there are buyers the poachers will continue to bring them out of their natural habitat.

Solution: educate the people so they might understand and stop buying those birds and many other animals that their place is in the wild.

It should be set on a plinth (I've been waiting ages to use that word), by the motorway near Slough.

The pointing out of being American is that even though he lived in a Capitalist world he did share his wealth with the world and before "some" Republicans jump and start making uneducated assumptions about sharing the wealth (which for some it would be socialism but the definition they have is just from a meme laugh).

It does not matter which nationality anyone is when doing good, there is always goodness in every nationality.

It matters because Americans do things like conserving land.

I have an acre of land that's mostly ohia forest. It's all I could save so far... but it's over half of what I own; and I haven't cut one ohia tree from the piece of forest that God gave me to learn malama aina and aloha aina.

One of the richest men in the world is Mexican. How many Mexicans do you read about that buy land so they can leave it natural forest?

And his wife donating the land he bought to the Chilean government for parks and reserves....

That land will probably be logged out and searched for oil reserves in our lifetimes.

lifeisadream: Unla
It is pathetic that we are always regretting the extinction of many species but as you said we do not enough to protect them.

I would propose to tax beer, wine, cigars, ilegal drugs, _________, _____________ (for adding some more) and fund conservation of species: plants, animals and the other groups (mushrooms, etc.)

Any other idea?

How do you propose to tax illegal drugs?

Once the Chilean land becomes a public land, many eyes will be there to watch for the use of that land and they are doing good efforts for conservation.

For the very rich Mexican man you are talking about that is another story and he does some "sharing of his wealth" but to deduct taxes, nothing noble in it and his phone companies are one of the most expensive in the world but we have not many other options so his phone company is very much like a monopoly which is against the law ( article 28 of our constitution).

Good that you do your share , there is always something we all can do if willing to and there are several wealthy Americans "sharing" their wealth to the world in different ways thumbs up

You can only tax legal drugs.

The drugs that people don't pay taxes on....

Those are "illegal drugs."

serene56: Is it not possible to leave untouched places and remote villages as they are or is this world so reliant on tourism that we must leave no stone unturned

Australia has the highest death on coral reef. Cuba has untouched species

and habitat. I don't want to see what would happen when tons of Americans

tourists start pouring over Cuba.

The poor behave like they're poor long after they stop being poor. This grasping where's my next meal coming from mentality gets stronger when people first become less poor. The first generation to become comfortable takes the spoiltness of wealth and combines this with the graspingness of poverty. They have no class.

It's been my experience that people who think they are better than poor people, are the lowest class of people you can find.

If for some reason this would lower the price of booze then a lot of the poor wouldn't care if we bulldozed every village and tree in the country and replaced them with a multi-storey car park. That's all I'm saying.

There's homeless and poor people who drink; but our libraries are full of sober homeless people who spend their days reading too....

Also, the judge in my town has the reddest nose on the island; and his brain is obviously pickled.

I was the elected co-chairman of "We The People," a homeless rights group in California.

The media constantly tried to dismiss us as drug addicts and alcoholics; but we were college students, day laborers, and moms.

All the millions of homeless people in America aren't on drugs and don't drink.

The homeless population boomed after the $98 billion S&L bailout in the Regan/Bush era.

That's when families packed their cars and moved to California to look for work.

That's when the iron mines went under, the steel mills, and the auto industry, that's when lots of people lost their farms.

That's when I saw grown men crying on the beach.

All those people weren't on drugs, they weren't drunks, and they weren't poor the year before the bailout.

That's when middle class families from the mid-west found themselves homeless on the streets of Florida and California... trying to keep their families warm and fed.

The homeless population booms again with each bank bailout we have...

AND I FIRMLY BELIEVE WHAT I JUST SAID IS OBVIOUS... SO OBVIOUS THAT ONLY THE MOST SCARED PEOPLE REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT...

Which is why I call them the lowest class of people on earth.
