"Although Mexico is one of the world’s top 20 natural gas producers, in recent years demand there has jumped well ahead of the country's domestic production. As a result, Mexico has become the most important foreign destination for U.S. natural gas. In 2010, Mexico imported 0.9 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of natural gas from the U.S. By the end of 2016 that had grown to more than 4 Bcf/d, which is over 5% of daily U.S. natural gas production:

Of course 5% of U.S. natural gas production is a big deal, and it looks like the volume is poised to go higher. This surge of exports is a boon to U.S. natural gas producers, as well as pipeline companies that are building out the pipeline infrastructure to move that gas south of the border.

Over the next few years natural gas demand in Mexico is projected to increase by nearly another 2 Bcf/d, as a result of new electrical generation capacity additions. That demand will be primarily satisfied by more imports from the U.S. This is just one of the reasons I am bullish long-term on natural gas producers. But it will also necessarily involve a continued build-out of pipeline capacity from the U.S. into Mexico, some of which is already well underway."

So, Not only will this wall keep out honest people willing to harvest our crops and do the dirty work most Americans wont do, it will also impede the free flow of Natural gas from wells in the United States to buyers in Mexico. Who is the idiot who ever came up with this dumb idea?
Oh Nevermind.

"U.S. pipeline capacity to Mexico currently stands at 7.3 Bcf/d, and is projected to nearly double in the next three years. This year four U.S. pipeline projects will be completed and should start to supply a total of 3.5 Bcf/d of natural gas to new natural gas-fired power plants in Mexico. By the end of 2018, two more pipelines should begin exporting 3.3 Bcf/d of natural gas from the Eagle Ford to Mexico’s Northeast and Central regions.

Thus the natural gas industry, as well as pipeline companies that are building some of the new pipelines -- ONEOK Partners, Energy Transfer Partners, and Kinder Morgan -- are probably a little nervous about the Trump Administration idea of a 20% tax on imports from Mexico to pay for a southern border wall. After all, Mexico would likely retaliate with an import tax of its own , and while there are some industries that might benefit from this, the U.S. natural gas industry would not.

Also, while I have argued that the Trump Administration's policies will benefit pipeline companies, future relations with Mexico may be somewhat strained in light of the campaign rhetoric and desire to impose tougher trade terms on the country. This shouldn’t impact the medium term demand for natural gas, nor the midstream projects discussed here, but it could have a chilling impact on longer term projects."

From my understanding everybody is supposed to go through proper border checkpoints but the border is like a sieve and anybody who's familiar with the terrain can literally walk from the US to Mexico and back again without even seeing a checkpoint. My son did just that a couple of weeks ago on a trip to the west coast. Crossed the border into Mexico, walked around for a while and walked back into the US.

There could be a hole in the wall for the pipeline.

The problem with a wall is it's putting a dumb physical barrier against the human brain. It's literally an insult that anybody would even suggest such a thing. The human brain thrives on defeating simple obstructions like this. I can guarantee you that Mexican drug dealers and human traffickers are already devising ways to penetrate this wall. Look how successful the Berlin wall was and that was just a city. The Berlin wall wasn't 2000 miles long and going through a desert.

You haven't actually quoted any 'evidence' to support your argument that it's a bad idea...

But whether it's a physical wall (or whatever) you seem to be opposed to the idea that the USA ( and one assumes any other country?) should have any control as to who enters / remains within its borders?

Have I understood you correctly ...

Yes and no. Any sovereign country has the absolute right to say who should be allowed to enter the country. So in that matter you are incorrect.

The evidence I presented (Mexico is a very big customer of our Nat gas producers and building a wall to keep Mexican citizens out of the country is like slapping a good customer in the face). Never a wise business practice.

A lot of the evidence that a 2000 mile wall is a bad idea is that not only will be exceedingly expensive and that money is sorely needed elsewhere, but it simply wont work. People have been breaching walls for 1000's of years. Whether it's going over it, under it around it, or through it. A wall isn't going to solve the problem.

When will people understand that with wall or not wall, undocumented workers will continue to go to USA (from Mexico and many other countries) as long as they are hired.
Should those undocumented workers enter USA? no, they should not and the numbers are going down.

btw there is already a quasi 1,000 km wall.

As for the gas they can make a tunnel, not need to make any hole in the wall, I do not think that would look nice

good idea. ask Berlin how they feel about walls and curtains.

It is good you can walk across land.

It will be a waste of building resources.

I can't say there is no benefit. but it just doesn't seem important

So a wall is needed. It cannot of course be compared with the Berlin Wall, but even that wall had border crossing and yes their will always be the drug barrons in any country getting in were the want, but this world is in a bad way with much worse than drug barons wandering around.

Maybe the army could do border controls with drones up high better employed than going into wars that they have no understanding of and the results ending like Iraq.

We are lucky we have water all around us do not need a wall, but i reckon our own army would be better employed looking after us than going into strange wars leaving a mess like Iraq
