I've always kept away from Craigslist, and here's why: Suppose you read an ad. Some guy is selling an old Nintendo. You answer the ad. Then you meet up with the guy, but when you get there, the guy is dressed up like the Gimp from Pulp Fiction. That's when you realize the guy probably doesn't have an old Nintendo to sell.
When we've done Craig's List we come in with Pepper Spray and stuff, kind of like this video, you have to be careful. My daughters always meet people at a large store in front.

Bought and sold a lot on Craigslist over the years, and to date all transactions have gone smoothly. I have rejected both potential buyers & sellers because I didn't get the answers or responses I expected. It helps to know all about what you're buying & selling and ask specific questions or provide accurate answers which can help weed out time wasters. Once you decided to meet then protection is paramount, don't go alone and when possible meet in public place.

Also most have heard the old saying " If it looks to good to be true it probably is " So that $1500 price for a late model truck that looks perfect and should cost $7000 is a dead give away. Which goes back to knowing all about what you're looking for including it's value.
I've bought & sold and gotten a lot of freebies and given away a lot of stuff on CL, never had a problem. One thing I've learned recently is never put your phone number in the ad.
