Having money changes you although not as much as it changes your kids. The drive to acquire wealth is the scarcity mentality - to look at money like a starving man looks at food, to gorge on resources because you’re insecure about gaining any more said resources - but developing in creates the abundance mentality. Class, nobility and style come to the fore amongst established money, there’s an assumption that there will always be money - so no need to be too greedy - and from here comes a particular type of human flourishing not related to commerce, money and profit.

ChesneyChrist: I do think modern greed as a reflection of scarcity meets opportunity. Growing up poor and then finding money easy to come by is reality if you're 60 or 70 and this has created a generation that I think of as peak grasping. The insecurity of scarcity in childhood combined with loads of money adulthood.
Baby boomers created the 1980s and you don't find as many young people who sound like this.
Grasping is not as fashionable as it was.
Tell a lie there are groups of young people to which money is the be all and end all - ghetto blacks and chavs. They sing about money all the time in the gutter. But I do see in older people the hunger of the gutter combined with years upon years of easy adulthood creating a perfect storm of parasitic decadence which caused 2008.Baby boomers created the 1980s and you don't find as many young people who sound like this.
