People is People... But some People are more different from other People... or so they seem to like to think. With the opening of borders, and no Gung-Ho Tribal fighting its a realy stupid concept to hang onto the few square miles of Nationality Bordered Land.

I read a joke once about One World Language.... and it all came down to speaking Bad English like a Good German!!! rolling on the floor laughing tongue dancing cheers

It was said that globalisation was predicated, among other things, on an abatement of nationalist feelings. That's one they got completely wrong. Nationalism rages on more than ever. What do you think?

The United States has been one country for over 200 years, yet people are very proud of the State within the Country where they are from. I think people will always have some pride in where they come from. They will normally think where ever they are from is better in some way than where others come from.

People are driven to Nationalism normally to preserve their culture. They don't want some outsider to affect the way of life they are accustomed to. This is the root of the problems in the Middle East right now. The Islamic fundamentalists don't like the influence the Western world is having on their culture. They like the old ways with subservience of women, strict adherance to religious law, etc., etc. They see the U.S. and other western countries as a threat to their way of life. They see our ways sinful. We see their ways as barbaric and a violation of human rights. Somewhere in between lies the truth.

Pride in one's nation is not necessarily a bad thing in itself. However, to an extreme it is destructive. How many millions more will die because of this? I am in the military, so Nationalism insures I have a job tomorrow. However, I would be one of the happiest people on this Earth if tomorrow I was no longer needed, because there was peace everywhere.

thumbs up

I don't remember reading any particularly jingoistic posts here but over on the International Forum I have read many and felt very disappointed that some of the American contributors hold very insular and quite often, arrogant opinions.

We Europeans, in general, are more liberal (small l) and have experienced more cultural diversity first hand than many Americans who, it seems, have not, so perhaps that is the reason we are more tolerant and accepting.

As an English woman I am proud of my nationality but I have chosen to live here in Spain and I have been welcomed wholeheartedly by the Spanish people.

Jan,

You are correct. Most Americans have not traveled or lived abroad. Even when they do travel, they isolate themselves into a small English-speaking community. This narrows their perspective of the World, and has a negative impact on the decisions they make regarding World issues. To me, as an American who has spent several years living abroad in Europe and Asia, that is sad.

Thank you Wooffy. In South Africa, as you may know, there are 11 official languages! I speak English. Although I learnt Afrikaans in school and used it in my younger life, I lost a lot of it living in KwaZulu Natal where its not spoken, Zulu being the 2nd language there. I speak what is called "kitchen Afrikaans"... the simple version.... almost a dialect. Now, learning German, which is similar to Afrikaans, I still have difficulty with the pronounciation of certain vowels and consonants.... they differ vastly from Afrikaans! And the "european" cold country languages here, they speak with an almost clenched jaw! In Africa we speak with wide open mouths!
