We had mercantile capitalism, industrial capitalism and then consumer capitalism. Older people lie right at the heart of consumer capitalism it’s what they’ve building their whole lives and some can just about remember industrial capitalism and the hardship and privation of that memory informs the gluttonous appetite of now. Baby boomers hunger like the desperate poor even now they’re far from desperate or poor, they can’t handle money and power they’re a generation of nouveau riche.
But with automation and AI and people acclimatising to wealth the next stage will likely be some sort of leisure capitalism. The work-life balance and moderation coming increasingly to the fore.
MsContessa: We live in a society where ‘Enough is never Enough’ more money, bigger houses, better partner, better job, more beautiful, fitter, slimmer etc, etc an these all come at a major cost!! In general, we do not volunteer to work with the most unfortunate in society, so we can only pitch our situation against what the Marketeers tells us what we should aspire to in life. After all, it is them that benefit the most financially.
Have you ever reflected on, respected and been grateful for what you have in life and decided ‘Enough is Enough’ or would you be far happier just chasing rainbows????
There's nothing new in wanting more and better... You may say you have enough but you always want better, for you, for your kids, for your grandkids... Newest i phones don't sell overnight at ridiculous prices because young people are happy with anything (but the best)... Pensioners don't drive last model cars because they are thinking for the "many" years they gonna use it... And there's the medium level of people who want to improve, being fitter, slimmer, more educated, more successful, well travelled...all this doesn't come cheap... There's nothing wrong in wanting better, and it depends on what exactly "better" means to you... I want to improve and if improvement means better then yes, I want better and I work hard to achieve it... And when I say it's enough?! May be when I have nothing to live for....
And someone like examples my description of poverty-induced gluttony. You get the impression that to win and acquire more stuff is the only ambition, what is won and the way it is won is irrelevant the one important thing is that she’s beating you.
This is the mentality we wish to move away from. Where competition makes you compete for things you do not even want and you appreciate nothing of what you get because it isn’t what you yourself wanted, this is an unquenchable thirst that would drive anyone bonkers with greed, egotism and appetite.

This is one example when 'Enough is not Enough' it is about knowing the cost of everything and the value of nothing.. It is happening all the time.
When I see young couples buying 4-5 bedroomed houses for their 2.1 children and they have a new car each, usually a SUV.. Their Children are left into creches at 7am and picked up at 7pm, some having been in school during the day! The average cost is €400 for 2 children per week.
I feel so sorry for those children, these are years that can never be reclaimed. Why cannot they do with the affordable house, the affordable car and let dad out to work and mom mind the children or vice versa. Children are so precious and priceless and are babies and toddlers for such a short time. They learn half of everything they are going to learn by the time they are 2.5 yrs. old and they are not learning it from their parents: they also learn by example. Cars depreciate and often house prices fall but that don't seem to factor in... Children are for life, and for them, happiness and contentment starts the day they are born.

Great synopsis! In addition, during the recession years, in Ireland, (and elsewhere), moratoriums were put in place regarding recruitment into the public service. This created a gap in authentic processes and ‘jobs for the boys’ political cronyism, became the norm at the highest levels. Therefore, wealth was acquired through plunder of public resources thus replacing high level of education as a status! Once they are employed in the public sector, they have arrived and there are opportunities everywhere for these people to 'earn' money and these opportunity would normally be associated with greed, corruption and waste. Enough will never be Enough for them. That is one of the reasons the younger generation, the non-voters, are squeezed out. Conversely, the development of a nation is dependent on highly educated, quality and skilled Human Resources. As an example, just look to the VULTURED Healthcare Systems as evidence...
mollybaby: We are being bombarded by materialism from birth. It is very difficult to not buy into it (pun intended) even if we try to resist.
Exactly! It has a lot to do with being uneducated on how we are being manipulated - behavioral science is studied by Marketeers so that they can get inside our head. It is a fascinating area of study and is also used for the good!!
Enough will be enough when we have a quality-oriented generation. In the context of so much stuff people will eventually turn picky.
But there was an old soviet saying which aptly applies to the mentality of today’s baby boomers - particularly the American ones - which was quantity has a quality of its own which basically means bigger is better. In reality this mentality is old-fashioned.
lindsyjones: Enough us a very relative term. But I'll not chase any rainbows. I pursue realistic dreams and ambitions.
In reality our needs change all the time. So perhaps even if enough is sufficient, we're not made to be idle. Hence the need to keep going.
Dreams and ambitions are like goals. They are healthy. It is really about greed and trying to buy status and not appreciating what you have in that moment!!

If there's anything I wish we can eliminate, to me it'd be greed.
It's the cause of all human destruction.
Krema's response us very ideal. Yes to make everything better.
Once upon a time, a little girl saw a beautiful rainbow and having heard that there is a pot of gold at the end of rainbows, she ran as fast as her little legs would carry her and headed to where she believed the rainbow ended. Much to her dismay, the little girl found that the end of the rainbow appeared to end at a nearby river and looking intently in the water, discovered that there was no pot of gold. The little girl was devastated but accepted the fact that there is no pot of gold at the end of rainbows and there likely isn't one at the other end either so she went forward in life never expecting more than what she already has and has remained humble in that thought to this very day. Oh, she still dreams about living a life of luxury with the finest house and furniture, car, clothes, you name it but she also knows that living a happy, healthy life far exceeds "things" that will mean nothing when she dies. Yes, happy, healthy, and humble is enough for that little girl in me.

I never wanted more and more of that stuff above but when I was younger I couldn’t get laid enough, especially in high school and college. I was once like the old bull then, now I either care less one day or I’m like the young bull the next.
Young and old bulls.....
The old bull and the young bull were standing at the top of the hill overlooking a paddock of many gorgeous young heifers. The young bull said, "Let's charge down the hill, knock over that fence and service one of those heifers each". The old bull wisely replied, "Why don't we saunter down the hill, open the gate, take a sip at the water trough and then service ALL of those heifers?"
The lesson to be learned here is that instead of being young, immature and stupid, quickly ruining any shot you have at a female, you should play your game like a gentleman; slowly and with much thought. Only by this method will you have your best shot at getting laid.
