You will note that Snopes rates the quote as "unproven". But NOT as "false". In other words, they are unable to disprove that he said it, and unable to label it a lie or an urban myth. Coming from a far-left site like Snopes, this is pretty much an admission it is genuine.
Johnson was not stupid enough to put such a remark in print or in a formal speech; it was an aside to his colleagues at the time. As such, "unproven" is probably the right call.
What I find especially note-worthy is that, in the 50 years since he made this comment, not one of his friends or family members has ever denied the quote was his. In other words, even if his friends and family don't know for sure he said it, they can at least believe it is something he might well have said. And frankly, that tells us all we need to know about Lyndon Johnson!
People like you however I could not vouch for!
