rusticbink: Ill put my opinion here !( and prepare to dodge the stones). Spirit is somthing invisible - like electricity- you try to explain it by the effects it makes ! Spirit may be where all things originate . The natural is a chemical subtances with other forces and laws to make every thing stable . In the same way Spirit has forces and laws that govern it's existence! I think believing in something is spiritual ! But if you believe in the wrong ideas , would you be decieved ? The definition of religious is a system of beliefs to practice, If the beliefs are built on wrong premise then the practice will be wrong ! Oooooo got off topic ,so i think one likes to avoid Spiritual subjects by saying "i not religious " ; but if you practice what you believe - then you are religious , ! So everyone is religious in some sense of the word !
But isn't that like saying not wanting to be labeled is in itself a label?
MustangWriter: Currently I'm religious NOT spiritual, because I am in the flesh.
We are spiritual beings currently having an earthly experience. NOT earthly beings with the occasional spiritual experience. We are gnolam. We have existed forever. We just don't remember because we are clothed in the dross form of flesh, so that we may know what it is like to be God (our Father who art in Heaven). To be able to chose good from evil. To experience opposition. Hot & Cold. Pain & Joy. Happiness & Sadness. Life & Death. This life is a test OF YOUR ETERNAL SPIRIT. What you do here will decide on your further eternal progression. What you did prior (in the pre-mortal/ spiritual world) determined your being here. Not every spirit made it here to this test for our eternal progression. (One third were cast out w/ the adversary and denied their progression or 2nd estate ) It is religion that allowed the scales to fall from my eyes so that I could see things with an eternal perspective. I'm not speaking of dogmatic religion, or the religion you see on your TV, or mega church pastor religions... but rather religion; pure and undefiled. Religion where one can see all of God's magnificent creation in a simple sunbeam. Religion where one awakes to the dawn and gives thanks for another beautiful day.
This question is probably unanswerable: I had a life transforming experience in 1972 which I was informed meant I had been born again and was now a Christian - having no other point of reference this became my religious identity for over 30 years - albeit I did not feel completely comfortable as a Christian I became a pastor - I enjoyed all manner of 'supranatural' coincidences which convinced me that outside of my Christian religion there was /is a guiding loving 'force' or personality - that which is called 'god'.
Eventually I moved out of Christianity and now follow nothing that might be described as a religion, nor even as 'sprituality' as that too implies some sort of recognisable faith position - so now I live a pretty reclusive life, write poetry which I perform, publish books which I give away, and feel that I live in what Rmi describes as a field beyond words, beyond faith, beyond religion, a space where I can meet all, find agreement with some and if not then that's fine too.
So to conclude I would not define myself as either religious nor spiritual just a happy traveller
