I have noticed that many people - on this site and elsewhere – describe themselves in this manner or, is it just a convenient box to tick?

I find this description very vague and possibly misleading. So, how exactly do you define being"spiritual"?

Here below are a few examples of the things that I have heard makes a person "spiritual" (singularly or in combination)

1. Does a “Spiritual person” believe in a “God/Creator” or a version thereof?
2. Do they believe in “Heaven & Hell”?
3. Do they believe in Karma and Reincarnation?
4. Have they heard a “call” and do they have a burning desire to walk a certain Path?
5. Do they ponder over the Universe and Humanity´s place in it?
6. Do they revere the environment and all creatures on earth?
7. Do they do good deeds for society, donate to charities, do volunteer work etc (mostly anonymously) without being attached to the results?
8. Or many other virtuous things?

The list above should not be regarded as “red herrings” which “must” be pursued. They are only suggestions/prompts.

I interpret it as

1- No organized religion
2- None of your business
3- Atheist, Pagan, or Heathen
4- I don't know what the hell I am
5- Don't persecute me
6- I am a nice guy, so I must be "Spirtual" laugh

The modern world is a materialistic religion and the very heart and soul of the world religion - the westerner - wants to distance themselves from that... in the most convenient way possible. It is a way not to be western although it completely is.

When things happen for no reason that is known about, "spiritual" people tend to take it as further confirmation of some fanciful belief they already hold. An unspiritual person might just think that there must be a reason for it even though they don't know what it is, and that if they did know what it was, it would turn out to be something mundane.

most religions are just chinese whispers ,,,
passed down over centuries,,
spiritual beliefs are mainly down to individuals who may have encountered something that has happened to them,
did man evolve from the ape who knows,
more likely that people where placed here from a far off galaxy that might have been dying , which if you believe many this planet is doing the same,
the only two true things are ,,you are born ,,then you die ,,

Now that falls into a third category, the name of which I don't know. Wildly fanciful, yet not spiritual.

Materialistic world religion contends that the whole world is basically poor Americans and the whole world can be converted into stateless tribes of consumers through the market. It is a vague sense that there's something rotten about the west and modernity, but no real discipline to do anything about it.

Hi Ed. wave
I agree with this, it´s more or less what´s happened to me in a way.

It seems to be at our lowest moments, at times of some trauma, that we find answers to some of our questions dunno

I believe in the word of GOD (bible) many don't mainly because they do not understand it. the bible is a book of prophecies told by true prophets. so I guess I am religious.

I don't understand quantum physics, but I am prepared to accept it. That is because I trust the scientific establishment who do understand it. I can't think of any good reason to trust either those who wrote the Bible or those who translated and interpreted it. A great deal of subjectivity was involved in both those processes.
