OK..minds out of the gutter please. I see lots of countries represented here and wonder what their country is really like. What foods, stores, jobs, life styles.
So I will start. I was raised on my parents farm. As a kid, started a one room school, then to 4 room and then to town. Town was 4 blocks filled with stores. Now most are empty. Town has moved north. We have a grocery, a Walmart, Dollar Tree, Aldis, 2 farm stores and lots of fast foods. There are a few restaurants that change owners. We are a tourist area. Not much except for scenery to look at. One Indian Agency house, the old forts Surgeons Quarters and school. Town has the old canal that is no much anymore.
Plenty of factories...plastic, glass, medical, concrete. One lumber yard.
Farms are broken up into houses with a few acres of land or less. They look the same, but from 9 farms between us and town, now maybe 50 houses scattered. The main farms are 1000 acre or more with one family to each. Mostly crops of corn or soy beans or hay. Livestock is hogs or beef cattle. Milk cows are few anymore. Glutted market and if a farm doesnt have a couple hundred head, cant make it.
Kids grow up and go to college, get jobs or move away. The town holds population somehow. Lots of people commute the 50 miles or more to the capital city to work.
We have native Americans around. They have a casino in the next town. Trying to teach the young some of the language and old ways. But, they made concessions to live style to keep the kids interested. Pow wows feature dancers in ribbon work, sequins and bright colors and not buckskins.

I live in a filthy country, trash on the ground everywhere, dogowners often don't clean up the dogpoo, lots of antisocial behaviour on the streets, almost everyday people are stabbed or shot, drugscriminals anywhere, often also they dump their trash in the nature.
Our politics is rotten to the core. More and more people are poor and have to go to the foodbank, cildren growing up in poverty and can't go to a sportsclub, have to buy 2nd hand clothes and often don't get breakfast or only a bag of chips.
It's overcrowded here, traffic jams everyday and many people can't get a house, due to the massimmigration. Houses are very expensive, since 2013 houses are almost twice as expensive (87%) so many people can't afford to buy a house.
And due to the fact that the population keeps growing the government is building more and broader highways, trains are overcrowded in the morning and evening when people go to their work or home, so everybody is standing close to each other.
The economy is running very good, but the cultural sector gets worse and worse, life is getting expensive, unhealthy food is cheaper than healthy food and even pubs are becoming very expensive. Many people want to leave the country, but they don't have the money.

Cheshire: white flighting new money where everything is a bit dull. Trophy wives and boring men. If you want to experience life in 1996, come here now.

Salford, Manchester: the opposite is the case. Mad dad's and mums that hold the place together. An unnerving glimpse into the future of western society.

Surprised abut the Netherlands. It used to be an old world, nice country. Blame globalization and over population. Seems that modernizing means crime, hatred, homeless, trash and traffic jams for every country. I see no reason to travel to exotic places because they dont exist. The world is ubiquitous with T-shirts, flip flops, jeans, fast food and cars. Culture is forgotten and what made a people unique has been buried by greed and lazyness.
Manners are extinct, disapline and work and respect have flown the coop on wings of I matter more than anyone else.roll eyes

I am so glad that there are still some people like you among us, Orzz. I also fear that one day, once all the wise people like you, with such great insights leave our world, this planet of ours will be left like an "orphan". thumbs up

The one thing I notice about your part of the world is there is still care taken about self. Women wear sarees often, hand made is common place and admired. Despite the hoards of humans, lots has been preserved and history observed.
What I notice about my state, Wisconsin is the green. Where some states are miles of crops, some are dry and deserts or prairie of level grass..Wisconsin in summer is super green. Plants abound if given the chance. Including trees sprouting in gutters, weeds taking over a garden and dense woods. My complaint is why do so many have to bite me!very mad doh Dewberries that creep on the ground and tangle your ankle. Prickly ash that stabs with thorns. Rampant black raspberries that make an impassible thicket. then dump some skeeters, ticks, chiggers and minute pirate bugs in the mix.blues

Well...you can't really do much about those weeds unless you are willing to take care of the vast empty land/space around you. Besides, if the land is fertile, they will keep growing things even on their own. I will tell you what, Orzzz, just invite more and more people at your place and ask them to walk all over your place every day in exchange of some drinks (beers, may be?). dunno laugh

laugh The best way with weeds is goats. But..I hate goats. Every time I have had them, either chase all over when they get out. Or yell "Get Off the CAR!"very mad I had two ewes, but sheep are picky. Seems my hedge is the favorite food. sigh
I get annoyed at the talk about how we should plant trees. Maybe in the cities. Although I see more and more cities planted green spaces and trees. Except maybe New York city..the concrete jungle. I spend half the summer yanking out baby trees. If one wants woods or lawn, name it a driveway. TV shows woods with little under brush. Wish I knew the way. Mine is thick with brush.
When my parents moved here, dad had the idea to clear the woods like a park. He and mom went out lots to prune, plant pines and make brush piles. Mom finally said this is nuts. Dad said but the Black Forest in Germany was like that. Mom asked who took care of it. And he said, well.. on the weekends, everyone from the city went out to the forest and they all took care of it. Mom said...thanks..so a few hundred people took care of it and you expect the TWO of us to do 100 acres..I QUIT!
Back in the 40s and prior, farmers left the cattle and cows graze in the woods and river bottoms. It was nice and clear with mostly big trees. Then the conservation department idiots said keep the cows out because they are ruining the river banks and woods. So the farmers did it. Now the woods are full of poison ivy, prickly ash, weeds, brush, fallen trees, vines and whatever. Small trees have no room to grow.frustrated

Our mango garden also has the same kind of problem ( ie. weed, grass and etc), but the good thing is that some farmers (living close to our garden) thankfully take the liberty to cut all the grass & weeds in order to feed their cattle and goats and thus helping our garden rid of all those unwanted grass and weeds without spending a cent. head banger

every time I see trees for sale, I think bring a shovel..how many do you want. One good thing about weeds is how many are edible. I grew up grazing along with the critters.
When I was a kid, almost every home was a farmer. Now down my road, there are only 3 or 4. The fields are worked but by the few farmers. The farms look the same sometimes..but the house belongs to a city person and the fields have been sold off.
We are the land of the mega corporate farm. At least more people are trying to garden now.

Luckily, it is not as bad as in the USA, but it is slowly but surely becoming like that in my country as well. My uncle own some lands in the city suburb, but a rich person from one of our biggest cities offered him loads of money to purchase some land. Needless to say, my uncle refused his request to purchase the land. But, the bad thing is that he has already bought almost 75 acres of land nearby which he apparently has turned into just like a "mega corporate farm" as you have mentioned in your comment. Pretty sad really......sigh

I just saw a interview on the TV. Gal had tried to buy a house. She had approval for financing. Found one that was her dream home and made the offer AT the asking price. Lost it. Found out some rich company had put in the price IN CASH and got it. She ended up looking at 30 houses until she finally got a house outside the prime city area.
It seems that these companies are pouncing on any home that hits the market in prime real estate areas like our major cities. Immediately buy them up with cash. Even going above the asking price.
Due to singles, baby boomers, lack of finances and mobility..the rental market is a owners market. These companies buy up all the houses and then turn around and rent them. Effectively controlling the rental market and home ownership.
I have a guy near me who now is up to 3000 acres. Much is in wild life prairie type. So he can get the government payments. He would love my farm. And I told him where to shove it.
Long ago, his dad bought up a 300 acre, original homestead I would have loved. The old man was going into a home and wanted $300,000 cash. No way!crying
And then the buyer sold the barn to the Amish, tore down the house AND detached summer kitchen and totally erased the historic farm stead and the history of an entire clan.very mad
