Dakarai: Why isn't the Australian team called The Bloody Sheilas? I don't get Matildas......
The Matildas name was born in 1995 prior to the team's first ever Women's World Cup campaign.
Prior to that point, the side was simply referred to as 'the Female Socceroos,' the nickname used by the men's team.
Wanting to give the team their own identity separate from the male side, SBS and the Australian Women's Soccer Association (AWSA) ran a viewer competition to decide on a new nickname.
A shortlist was made which included the Soccertoos, Blue Flyers, Waratahs, Matildas and Lorikeets with fans voting for their preferences.
Matildas ultimately won out with the name a reference to the iconic Australian song 'Waltzing Matilda'.
Players were reluctant about the new nickname at first as they had no say over it, but it very quickly became synonymous with the team.
