come on people lets share the hard times we endure to get our selves to school????
just somethng to show the kids that we where not the only ones who walked to school.
heard a 13 year say " Yeah right" "its against the law" "they would never make kids walk to school in this kinda weather."
I remember walking in -10 weather with one foot of snow without a book bag... only paper bags back then. walking along the road in 4 foot pile of snow left from the plowtrucks like mountiain goats, the tail wind when the trucks passed by..
Seeing as i was born and intially went to school in the islands, I did not have to battle said weather conditions...lol...
However school started at 7am and ended at 2pm because it was much too hot to sit in class after that...and oh yes....my original "writing" tools was a slate and abacus...my kids think i rode a dinosaur to school....
I was the oldest of six children...we were very poor by todays standards....the girls were not allowed to wear pants, jeans....only knee socks and tights...on those blistery below zero snowy winter days I froze my lege off walking.....then when a bully threw ice balls at your frozen legs I would cry.....we couldn't afford tights...so I would end up with welts on my lege from the frozen ice balls....and of course cried in private....finally I had enough of the bully and I handled it my way ...which is another story.....I showed my son how far I walked and they could not believe it...under those conditions of winter....no busses for us available or parents to drive us...not even warm enough clothes....
My daughter is home from HS I think it was good that they cancelled school...The only day they had off due to weather no big deal.
Living where I live some kids do have a long walk and parents can be stupid, or neglectful when it comes to this kind of weather. See little one with no coats on every day in the winter when wind chill is below zero.
Ninamoosha-My mom made us wear anklets, and we would yank on those things to try to make them come to our knees. Didn't get to wear pants til about 3rd grade. But I would have gotten those bullies for ya'!!!!!! And boy have I seen those kids, with no coats, only short sleeves, and sometimes even shorts!!!!!!!!!!!!! waiting at the bus stops. First thing that comes to mind is always, "Do they even HAVE parents?" Mine may complain when I tell them to wear something warmer, as mom couldn't care less whether or not it is "cool", but they know they are wasting their time LOL
back then more woman stayed home and got their kids off to school prepared them breakfast, lunch and dinner. good point mothers are not what they where back then...
Diito walked once in grade school 5th grade and got there and school was cancelled for the day.. it was only a mile but that second mile walking back home walking backwards and falling down cause the wind blowing directly in my face. BBRRRrrrrrrrrrr
