I hate to jump in on this thread, but I just can't help myself!! I'm a glutton for punishment.
This thread seems to show the worst of us, not the best. It has made Americans look like buffoons, blindly following George W. Bush, even though we know now just how wrong he was. Iraq was a mistake, it continues to be a mistake, and we really shouldn't be there. I wish the die-hard war supporters would recogize a vain effort when they see one. This is one war we can't win, and shouldn't have picked in the first place. But we, as Americans, must stand up and say enough. We were mislead. Now it's time to fix it!
As for my European friends, you have been quick to judge America on a minority of it's citizens. A majority of the people here are against the war, and have been for a long time. I know it can seem, though the media in your countries and mine, that we have no clue what goes on in the world around us. Not true. The French elections were just about the hottest topic of convo. here for the last week. It was all over the news, and I know I spent a drunken Sat. night discussing it!!
Oslojente and highfidelity give it up or is it worth to argue with stupid people sorry kevduf we didnt want to generalize, there are also smart people in the U.S. And Oslojente u can be proud about your social security system in Norway, it is beside the other scandinavian countries one of the best in the world.
sorry Frenchgirl2know but it makes me angry to see some people in here not respecting the opinions of other people, just coming here to argue, they are always right
i also like the taxation system of companies in your country, should be an example for our countries but must admit wouldnt like to live there because it is often so cold there
1. Here's about the best places in the world. A simple Google search would have found this out for you:
"The United Nations has released its annual report this week, ranking the quality of life for 177 countries of the world. For six consecutive years, Norway has taken first place. With a population of only about 4.5 million, it is one of the most oil-rich-per-capita nations in the world, giving the society large amounts of wealth to lavish upon its citizens in education and social services.
Iceland, Australia, Ireland and Sweden are ranked as the second through fifth best places to live, with Canada, Japan and the United States at six, seven and eight."
2. Why do you repudiate what I have written about Post war Iraq? Where's your source? I was speaking from first hand knowledge having been to Basra. Here's a UNICEF report on a post war Iraq:
"Iraq boasted a modern social infrastructure with a first-class range of health-care facilities, and the Iraqi people enjoyed one of the highest standards of living in the Middle East. In 1991, there were 1,800 health-care centres in Iraq. More than a decade later, that number is almost half, and almost a third of them require major rehabilitation. Iraq had used its oil revenues, which accounted for 60% of its gross domestic product (GDP), to build a modern health-care system with large Western-style hospitals and modern technology. Iraqi medical and nursing schools attracted students from throughout the Middle East, and many Iraqi doctors were trained in Europe or the U.S.A. Primary health-care services reached about 97% of the urban population and 78% of the rural population in 1990."
Now remember don't confuse fact with the ramblings that go on in your head.
Hey, I am liberal and have been against Bush and this war from the beginning but you prove yourself when you call other people stupid and say they do not respect others opinions and they are always right. Just because there are more of us against Bush and this war does it make you feel superior to do the same thing you accuse others of...calling names and not respecting their opinion? You lose credibility why should they even want to listen to you?
Actually if you look at the argument here you will see that one side is presenting facts, figures and sources -- in other words how a normal debate should be conducted, while the other side provides no data, no sources and relies on God and Country as their only argument. When facts are denied it becomes really difficult to maintain a civil discourse.
