The civilisation of Egypt has fascinated people since ancient times. Nowadays the sphinx and the pyramids, King Tutankhamun and Queen Nefertiti are among the most recognised images on the face of the earth. In this gallery Michael Wood, presenter of many BBC archaeology and history programmes, shows off his own favourite top ten historic Egyptian sites. Some of them will be familiar, some could be real surprises, and on the way he'll be telling some of the stories of the pharaohs and the queens who shaped Egyptian history.

cheers

The Maya were quite accomplished astronomers. Their primary interest, in contrast to "western" astronomers, were Zenial Passages when the Sun crossed over the Maya latitudes. On an annual basis the sun travels to its summer solstice point, or the latitude of 23-1/3 degrees north.

Most of the Maya cities were located south of this latitude, meaning that they could observe the sun directly overhead during the time that the sun was passing over their latitude. This happened twice a year, evenly spaced around the day of solstice.

The Maya could easily determine these dates, because at local noon, they cast no shadow. Zenial passage observations are possible only in the Tropics and were quite unknown to the Spanish conquistadors who descended upon the Yucatan peninsula in the 16th century. The Maya had a god to represented this position of the Sun called the Diving God.

The Maya believed the Earth was flat with four corners. Each corner represented a cardinal direction. Each direction had a color: east-red; north-white; west-black; south-yellow. Green was the center.

At each corner, there was a jaguar of a different color that supported the sky. The jaguars were called bacabs. Mayans believed that four jaguars held up the sky.

cheers

I don't know much about history. I would like to learn all about all of the ancient cultures. The one I find most interesting is Chinese history. I don't know why, maybe because of the artwork. I find the colors and images of ancient china beautiful.

I studied art history for a while and it put me to sleep because all we studided was european art (not that there is anything wrong with it). I would like to see something other than a picture of the Virgin Mary or of Jesus. Most of it was centered on religion. It can get kind aboring.

I've started myself on a quest of sorts to study something new every month. June will be the month of voodoo (just for teh info, not the practice), maybe July will be ancient Chineses culture.

Gads, as once I was a student of Anthropology, I have so many favorites.

Mayans and Incas; Their engineering was so far advanced for what they worked with, it is still amazing. There is still an old aquduct built by the Mayans back in 350 B.C. that is still running today.

Chinese; What they contributed to the world is just simply amazing in itself. Screen printing books as far back as 150 B.C. if not further. Ehgineering feats that still amaze people today, likke the first salt water well dug in around 335 B.C.

Greek/Mycenaen and related cultures. Many of our writings and styles are based from these cultures. Again they had created some fantastic engineering feats for infrastructures of cities, and set the foundation to where much of oue sciences would later develop some of our major achievements.
Runing water for homes was first developed in this region, as well as sewar systems, street development, multi-story and dwelling homes were first developed here. I find it fasinating that they even had running water through out a three story home in and around 75 B.C.

The Mongals had their major achievements as well, such as reasonings of laws, that had not been used before Ghangus Kahn, asa well as Diplomacy which took a major turn in history towards the end of his life.

I cannot think of a single culture from the past that has not had a major contribution to the world today in something they did back then.

If you watchj an American Armor collum charging into combat, you will see a Mongol hoard charging into combat, as this is the tactics devised by Ghangus Kahn during his reign, and so effective it is still used today.

If you look at your Plumbing, you will see Mycenaen workmanship in use today, as this is what in many ways they had.

If you look at above and below ground aquifers, you wioll see Mayan and Roman engineering in use today.

So how can one pick just one culture to be a favorite??? dunno

Nice question!! grin

Well, for me, it has to be the Romans, of course. But also the Greeks, Egyptians and Native American Indian. When I lived in the Rockies, we knew many Native Americans, amazing people and culture. My trip to Egypt was awesome and we have a lot to thank the Romans for, particularly here in the UK. I mean, as a woman driver, I would have to drive round more bends if it wasn't for them, wouldn't I?? Though, I do believe they were great at building straight roads until they got to Somerset and discovered cider!!!
