I've been talking to a few of guys on here. Some of them do a lot of posts. One I see does do quite a few postings which are all clear and easy to understand.
When he sends emails to me, I sometimes have to read it several times to figure out what the heck he is saying. Grammar, spelling, wording, etc. I'm a little confused as I have read the scammers page and the wording in the emails are a lot like the ones on the scams page. Should I be worried as the forum postings are really clear and maybe he's just not reading what he's writing in the emails???
I deal with scams on a daily basis. Thats part of my job. Busting bad guys and dealing with Nigerian & China Fraud are part of it. Right now, its just talking; obviously no plans to meet and hasn't asked to communicate outside of here. Obviously, if I had gotten a clear hint it was a scam I'd report (I know a lot of the tricks from work even prior to reading the scammers page here), but right now it just seems like its two different people or he's typing and not reading it before sending.
I don't know....What do you think?
I'm about to head out to work and then staight off to my brother's MMA fight so I probably won't be back on tonight and I have a ton of emails to answer, but I'd love to hear your opinions on it.
Hmmmm. It does seem kind of strange. I wouldn't know why a person would come across differently in emails than in the forums... maybe you should ask him why..
I might do that. Its just like he doesn't speak English and is translating it. Its bizarre.
Example of what I'm talking about, not from an email, is like..."To me understand you that worrys lots." instead of "I understand that worries you a lot"
yeah... but only a few on here and from the china area. the chinese ones tend to be a little more organized in their attempts and are a little harder to figure out at first.
my experiences in other sites have been from nigeria, and a whole bunch from russia. the russians are very easy to figure out. they all have the exact same story, exact same type of profile, and write the exact same words. they also do not read the responses you write to them, at least as near as i can tell. they all tell the same story of being in a program where their country puts them in the US on a temprary work visa, then when it comes time to fly... they all of a sudden need money for airfare.
the nigerians all start out slow, then gradually work in an emergency that leaves them stranded there with them begging for money to help them get out. a friend of a friend fell for one of these and lost $3000 when he sent money then accepted and cashed travellers cheques, supposedly to repay him, that his bank did not verify... they were fake and he got taken for the whole amout including what he "loaned" her.
it is amazing how many people fall for this, but i guess when you are so desperate to be loved... it happens, sadly. my rule of thumb for these are... if you cant meet me without having to ask me for money to do it... good luck and have a nice life, lol.
oh... my experience has also been that they want direct contact right away where email is concerned. it is odd that these guys you are dealing with have not asked for direct email contact right away... but maybe they are getting smarter in their methods? later :)
Any messages I get that make any mention of Nigeria or reflect the slightest illiteracy other than typical text speak and shortened words, are deleted and blocked immediately.
oh... and, yes... their use of the english language is very hard to follow in their emails. yeah... it is like they are trying to translate their own words.
mitchell... can you space those letters a bit? i got my english glasses on now, hehehehe
It is my belief that non English speaking scammers are using translation programs to switch back & forth between languages. This leads to all kinds of usage and context errors like the ones you see so often in their emails. They also must have a veritable library of form letters in which they can simple insert your name. The technology for doing this has been around for years known as "Mail Merge".
Suggesting communication off site is not a good litmus test for a scammer because I do that a lot and I doubt anybody thinks I'm a scammer on here, I simply have way too much history on here by now.
I've had loads of improbably "modelesque" young women write me offlist who seem suspiciously English language-challenged. I'll say one thing for them -- they certainly are affectionate with all those endearments (even if half of them are misspelled)!
