There was nothing to take offence to. The thread heading was not inflamatory, it was provacative--meant to provoke lively discussion.
The topic was philosophical and called for us to look at what is happening from a broad perspective as far as what is going on with America and world events at this period of time in history. We should not have gotten side tracked into a lot of details and assumed accusations were being made.
If we could just look at things from a broader point of view, be more objective and thoughtful, less defensive, it could have been a very intertesting discussion.
I clerked a precint poll in Florida during the Presidental race of Gore and Bush. We ran a fair and legal election from what I saw. We had imprefect equipment (hanging chads from the ballot cards) that in the tight race of a difference of only 560 vote, made a difficult recount.
I take offense that to your suggestion of a improper election. None of various monitoring bodies mentioned anything about improperities occuring. They were totally free to monitor at any level of the process.
As for the post election recounts. Some 7 million Floridians voted. And automatic recount is required by state laws when the difference is less than 1%. The difference was less than that and recounts occurred.
Those questioned ballots were inspected individually by a canvas board compromised of a independant, a republican and a democrat. How more fair do you wish this process to be? Because at that time it was conducted to both state law and to a equity of the parties involved to the best of our ability.
At the risk of pointing out the error Indy .. yes you are right, the oil people would truly love higher prices, hence higher profits.
The reason they don't get them in the US is because the gov't actually tries to keep prices down for the american consumer lest americans scream bloody hell.
They do this with 'oil reserves' a system created back in the energy crisis days to effectively stave off another crisis should wars and countries with the oil stop delivering that product to the US.
The US is among the cheapest gas/petrol countries in the world. Canadians pay twice as much at the pumps, europeans pay a little more than 3 times as much at the pumps as americans do.
If US citizens had to pay those prices there would be bedlam.
Further to this point, costs for food in the US are also amongst the lowest in the world, contrasted with the highest cost in health care and obesity.
The US gov't does this, (controls priciing) despite the oil magnates desire for higher prices. They do it for the US citizen, just one of the things the US gov't is good at. Supply and demand are equateable but not exclusionary)
The oil companies get their proifts, but they get the largest profits abroad, where the majority of the oil is as well, which boggles the mind really.
Last point lest you think I am saying that it is all about the oil, I am not, the US gov't actually does employ a global view, all peoples, not just americans. In concert with their allies they do some very good things on the world front.(G7) And the world does need policing, if not america and its allies then who?
The UN (supposed world policing) drags its heels and like many gov't like entities its process is slow and lacks any real bite. Even the UN is built on the legs of the american dream ... freedom of choice, but loses any credibilty because it is led by civilized turn the other cheek types. Iraq went on for years and years and and the worst thing the UN did to saddam was an embargo? The citizens suffered but saddam didn't.
The US is a great place to live, they do some great things on the global front, they do keep prices down for all its citizens and yes they go into places some people feel they have no right to, but if one thinks for one moment what it would be like to have a saddam living next door to them, they would appreciate some law enforcement from anyone willing to deal with him and his butchering, inhumane ways.

Hmm, I remember preaching to my daughter that standing on the sidelines doing nothing is a "decision" to do nothing and let everyone else do what ever they want.
Not voting, Its the same as watching some one rob an old lady and standing there doing nothing. Because that is what people in power will do if you don't knock them silly every once in a while. Rob you or someone else blind.
Me, in the last US election I voted for "Donald Duck" - wrote it in. (Crossing an X through Candidates are not counted - you have to write in a name) Did you know in the last US presidential election - 8% of the popular vote, highest ever recorded went to fictional characters? They ruled out "Clark Kent" as a fictional character!
Oh my god! I just contributed to the longest rhetoric I have seen on CS. Time for a beer!
So now, since there has been so much US bashing and since I live in Europe, let me just open up the flood gates! Maybe its because Europe does not want their oil turned off that it is so popular to criticize the US and say nothing about Russia and China - the true world powers????
Hmm, Nobody says anything about Putin ???? Only Bush is the Maniac here. Putin's party won close to 78% of the Parliamentary votes.
36 of Putin's closest friends control 25% of Russia's wealth
All newspapers, radio stations, and TV stations that made derogartory remarks about Putin these last few years have been closed.
Old people in Moscow are being intimidated or killed for their apartments.
Doing business in Russia means you have to pay off everyone.
Russians are coming in with their oil money and buying Soccer teams, companies, houses and entire towns in Europe.
My point - there are lots of bad things going on in this world. Open your eyes. Europeans like to bash Bush and the US but kiss up to someone who's government killed a guy in London with radioactive isotopes - something you can not get as an individual.
I wouldn't like you to think that my remarks about interests were directed at you personally. They were not, any more than any other contributions I have made to this debate. I wish your son well and hope he comes back safe to you. Ideally soon.
I am not sure what you mean by us making change....it is the desire to shake up a part of the world and re-order it in a particular image that is at the root of much of this trouble. I am not looking for someone to come in and sort out the world's problems....other than the UN if the major member states would only back its authority properly.
There was a very good documentary shot during the coup attempt in 2002. It was local opposition elements backed by the CIA and the tacit support of the US embassy. Worth watching. They got great footage. it was called "Chavez inside the coup" I think
Spain's leaders had an election. The people wanted the war stopped. They voted for the party that said they would withdraw. That party won. They kept their promise. Cut and run?? That is democracy.
yes it was 'slightly' inflamitory ... but if you chose only to see the inflamation and attack the poster you prove the point of the inflamation.
Attacking him only shows that you are as much a person who wants to push others around until they fall down and acquiesce to your beliefs. Thats terrorist mentality, who cares what he says or what he stands for just attack him and get him out of the way...
Instead of attacking, be american, tell him the good things about being american, the good things that 'american way' does to better the world. This is the way to change anothers mind, by opening it, not by killing it.
Do something constructive so the people in the world understand the american agenda and the good results of ts policy. Acting like a terrorsit and trying to kill the OP only prove his inflamatory title to be true ... accept the american way ..or else ... you are doing exactly that. You dont want to prove him right, you want to prove him wrong and you can't do that by showing him his title is right.
Great post B.... But think about this.... Is it the general consensus of this forum that the United States had a right to invade Iraq based on its original premise that Iraq was hiding WMD's and hampering the efforts of the UN inspectors?
I am not a politician.... never could be.... however I feel that the US had the high ground in the beginning, and most of the sympathies of the world. When the attacks occured on 911, we should have convened a world summit involving all nations to participate to adopt a new set of rules to deal with terroism and the country's that harbor them, as well as rules concerning countries attempting to join the nuclear club. A golden opportunity for the US was lost to actually be a true leader in the battle for world peace.
The title * IS the way most of the world sees things. The Big Borther concept or having accepted America as one up didnt happen without a reason.
Precisely my half of the world would sees it as " western ways " and " influence " actually thats frivolous i know but they mean the US usually.
But i DO believe there is more good than meets the eye thats overblown as bad !!!
Thats why " healthy discussion " ?? No one is arguing the supremacy status or the inherent flaws in any human system. But the fact that the status is breeding an impreialistic approach.
Lets face it ... most of and i mean " MOST " of the cutting edge technology and advances are concentrated in certain areas of the map and America stands out. The fact being blatantly obvious , it is going to be natural to use the assumed power for whims and fancies.
Its not about the good or bad that America does. Its about the pros and cons of one action which leads to a chain reaction !!!
As Allan says , enlighten us !!!
Sorry but i HAVE to say " The worst form of victory comes from numbing or putting down another ".
