'Mad as a hatter' is a phrase sometimes used in the uk. This was originaly a reference to the glue used by the workers in hat factories and its affect on them. As i live in Stockport where we have a hat museum, a relic of a bygone era and our local football team are nicknamed 'The Hatters', it might explain the behaviour of some of the people in this town.
