I know many would disagree with me, but I wish that email was limited to only allow interaction between parties who are NOT in the same building! I wouldn't want to be without email as a means of communicating with friends and family or with other embassies and back to Washington, etc. But I hate the fact that, instead of being a means of communication on the job, it has become THE MAIN form of communication. As I work in the busiest and most highest-level office of our embassy, I receive an average of 75 or 80 emails per day. If I take the time to read each one thoroughly, respond to most, file others into separate folders, delete the garbage, etc., I could easily spend 80% of my day just managing emails, leaving little time for anything else. I don't want other people's emails to me to be managing my time. People tend to think that, once they have sent an email to someone, the task is now out of their hands and it's now up to the recipient....the old "didn't you get my email?" routine. Anyway, it's a real problem for me....too many emails, not enough time.
Gosh Gilly where do I start? Bombs and warfare... Half the drugs on the market that are used by our children... It seems whatever we design to improve the world, we spend the rest of our lives fixing the problems it created..
Perhaps we should all simplify our life just a little and spend more time enjoying the universal beauty....we may not witness God but we can see see where his footprints have been...
I wish the plow had never been invented. For the first time in history man was able to produce more then he needed to survive thus changing everything and putting us where we are today. What a different world it would be if each of spent the majority of our time providing for ourselves and our families... no mass fishing, farming etc.
I believe the automobile is singularly the most responsible factor for the breakdown of family values. Before the advent of autos. families stayed closer to each other. It wasn't unusual for a community to have an entire family within it's borders. Now families are so spread out, some never even se each other again
The auto also allowed for a lot of"back seat pregnancies". Also as autos became more accessable to young people, it fed into their rebellion. Going out and not coming home till all hours, causing a strain in family relations.
Without the automobile,we wouldn't be this dependant upon fossil fuel. Thus wars would have been averted
The automobileis mans folly. It now is not a luxury, but at it's inception, it had a major effect on the breakdown of the family.
The mobile phone! or at least SMS caused the break up of my marriage and it was all probably very innocent. After my wife went away on a training course she started getting a lot of txts when she returned and would not explain who or what they were about.
She became obsessive with the phone taking it to the toilet with her and hiding it whereas prior to this she would leave it lying around the house as we always did. So perhaps there was something going on. In the end she requested that I leave as I had become obsessed and controlling. On the contrary, I just wanted to know who it was important to text when she thought I was asleep, or from the bathroom!
Zarah: Perhaps we should all simplify our life just a little and spend more time enjoying the universal beauty....we may not witness God but we can see see where his footprints have been...
I guess I would say the wheel! It's what enables plows to be easier to work, and the automobiles to go faster... so the wheel is the culprit!
But if are going back, and looking for things that shouldn't have been invented, then, the sole evolution of mankind is at fault, we should have stayed as we were during Cromagnon era... no language, no written language... sticks and stones as defense, and fire for cooking and warmth...
We are responsible for the use and or misuse of any device... I believe that an inventor usually thinks of only a few possibilities for a new invention... but then a Marketing manager comes along, a Brain-Storming session takes place and Voilà! we have endless possibilities for a cell phone. Remember when cell phones looked like a brick? and Digital Cameras where the size of Polaroid cameras? And when laptops weighed the same as a CPU?
In fact, I'll wager virtually all smokers wish the same thing though I'm sure there are many who couldn't care less about the health hazards and just enjoy smoking too much to want to quit.
