Interesting question - not everyone thinks about these accidents when a long time has passed (in this case, 22 years).

I lived in Stockholm at the time (...), and we were told not to eat things like local wild berries and mushrooms that year. Who knows what the long-term effect will be - only time will tell...

I remember at the time the EU were paying out compensation to european farmers whose sheep had to be slaughtered as they were showing more than the safe maximum number of rads of radiation (seven, I think it was) for public consumption. However, claims got so high that the EU upped the limit to fourteen rads! Stuff public safety, just let,s save money.roll eyes sigh

mmmmh--- would be interesting to Geiger counter the areas in question again --- oh! but that made send property values down and spread wide panic amongst the public that should be controlled through naivety

Interesting fact -- A twin power plant to Chernobyl is still operating on the outskirts of Vilnius, Lithuania. I drove past it on the highway when I visited a few months ago. It is scheduled to be shutdown when a joint project to replace it is completed by Lithuania and Estonia.

The areas around Chernobyl are still contaminated to extremely high levels ...

Over the year(s), the contamination builds up in the bodies of the kids who live in that area ...
The families who are able to, with help from their and foreign governments, send their kids abroad (UK is one of the countries) where they stay with host families for so many weeks to allow the levels of contamination to go down again ... they have to do this every year in order to sustain an alleged level of contamination which allows them to develop and grow ...

The trips are organised with adult facilitators who travel with all the kids by coach ... the stays abroad are free for the kids ...

Have no idea about the countries/areas that the contaminated "cloud" travelled over/through ...

Well, it's a good policy not to believe television. I mean, their whole policy is pandering to happy thoughts, right?

Yes, it's indeed a good policy to not believe everything you see and hear - but I can't agree with the statement about TV catering to happy thoughts; just look at all the terrible/sad/scary/horrible things they show on the news, chosen to get the most viewers - the gorier stories, the better, it seems...

Was discussing this subject round the dinner table tonight ..... seems that many places that were radioactive have re-habilitated ...... that nature has a way of recovering - simply because of the absence of humans? In the Pacific the sea is now teeming with life - but divers stay away because of the possibiltiy of radioactive contamination. Well, seems there is hope for the earth if we anhialate ourselves with a massive bomb?

banana cheering handshake cheers

smoky: Yars darl, I think it is being worked on ... and in the meantime they run around with machine-guns and mortars and things. And the other half is working on how to save every single human on earth, and at the same time worrying about the limited resources left on earth ..... while all this is going on ... the earth waits with bated breath ... much as I do.... when logging onto CS ..... to read what our brilliant minds have been mulling over during the night! :cheers

I must say, not having a completely full grasp of the German language helps me to lead a very peaceful life ..... not being able to fully understand what is written in the newspapers or said on the TV news .... So I live in total ignorance, unless I learn something from someone else, and then I dont fully believe them cause it could be just hearsay. Tis a very peaceful existence to only have to worry about the here and now and what affects me personally within the boundaries of my property.....cheers Seems the only real concerns I have are about things like Slugs, Snails, the Wild Birds, and the Hedgehogs.....cheers .. oh and of course there is another pest who sometimes finds its way into the roof and then chews holes to get out again .... forgotten what its called, looks like a large rodent...Otherwise life is rather blissful to be ignorant....grin
