Here in Spain we have an id card system and you use it for everything, in fact you can,t do a thing without it. Anyway, sometime in 2007 the Spanish Gov cancelled non Spanish nationals rights to a card. What you get now is an A4 certificate which is only valid with a passport. This has to be carried with you at all times,in case for example you get stopped by the police.

So, the British Gov recommend you only take your passport out with you when it is needed, say to go on holiday for example. The Spanish Gov say no, take it with you everytime you go out, or at least this is implicit as if you do not take it out you cannot do anything.

Went to the bank to withdraw cash......

"ID Card please"

" Sorry I haven,t got one any more"

" Then no money"

" But you all know me here, I need my money to get fuel for the car to go to Seville Airport to get my daughter"

" No card no money"

"I,ve got my passport"

" No,you opened the account with an id card, a passport is not valid"

" Then can we now incorporate the passport into the account and then get my money"?

" No, that can,t be done"

" Well I do have one of the new certificates which replaces the card, but I have had to give that to my accountant who is representing me at the tax office this week. So how can I get my money"?

" You can,t"

No lie, I was two bloody hours in my own bank, the biggest in Spain and we went an hour past closing. They just wanted me to leave. Of course I refused to budge til they gave me cash.

Anybody else had similar probs with this?frustrated

Simple solution is to carry a mirror at all times. Then when they say "do you have proof of identity?"

you simply whip out the mirror, look in it,and say "Yep,that´s me all right" grin

Who's the fairest of them all?

"Well ... Oh! Gracious citizen of Spain!! In this land of dark machos, they say that fairest makes for most handsome!
But you, Oh! ex-husband of Spanish beauty and father of Iberian blooded, insightful and sweet boy, you are neither dark macho nor fair -since you have no hair- This, Oh! contributer to the Spanish economy and employer of many spaniards -albeit without possession of ID card- makes you unique and beautiful in your own right!!!

Ah, don`t take it personally Elley! Just keep going everyday, and keep asking for your money - they`ll give up sooner or later. Take along your flask of coffee, some sarmies, a camp stool, even a small table - and your laptop - and ask them politely to plug it in, so you can keep CS updated about the status of your money. You could even get your accountant to accompany you? .... with all the files and things he`s using just in case there`s a document they want to see?

Actually, a small forklift truck could come in handy - you could have everything set up on a board, and just drive it into the bank, and will make shuffling forward in the queu a bit easier? They should have a wheel-chair access you could use? If not, then tell them you gonna change your bank, like Foreveryoung suggested.jackolantern

PS. If they not happy about plugging in your laptop, then take along a pack of cards and play Solitaire, drink coffee, eat sarmies, and smile and be happy. Manàna is another day!cheers

Try Africa for cars/registration licence!

I was using my sons car after he left the country, and went to renew the licence.

The man behind the counter looked up on his computer and told me my son lives in another Province.
I told him my son lives with me, here, and is visiting in Switzerland, not SA.
He said "*NO! Your son lives in PE of SA".
Okay, okay, so can I just pay the licence?
"No, you need a letter of permission from him".
But he is in another country.
"Well, he must first change his address back to here before he can get his licence here".
But he never stayed in PE in his life!
"Makes no difference, he is registered in PE"

So, I ask him how that could possibly have come about?
He says, "Well someone must have stolen his car and re-registered it there"
But no-one stole his car - I have it - outside at this moment.
"Well, sorry, but he will still have to go to PE and notify them of his change of address"
How can he change his address when he never had an address there?

By this time the queu is out the door and everyone is begining a Slow-Clap - so I leave.

My Italian friend takes me to Another Licencing Office in another town, leaves me outside, enters and slaps down the licence renewal form and asks for the licence.
"ID"says the clerk.
"This is a different name" says the Clerk (of course! its an ITALIAN name!)
My friend begins a long convoluted story about this is his adopted son whom he never got around to changing his name after he married his Mama and the poor boy is studying in Switzerland and his Mama is SO worried about his studies cause they costing a lot of money - and what about the licence?

... Can you believe it?! The Clerk gives him the licence!... a total stranger to my son!doh Nothing is mentioned about the PE address, the Permission!
Luuurve an Italian for their Charm and Complications that totally befuzzle everything and everyone!

Many years ago as a freelance writer (of quite some repute, ahem)I was given the job of writing a brochure for a motorshow. I decided to write a series of articles on road safety. Now one of the great things about that career was I had a lot of latitude to do pretty much what I liked. So, having decided on the theme I got in touch with regional police for help. It was great cause I got to spend a day on a police training skidpan as well as a day on the motorway with a motorway bobby. One of my most abiding memories is of sitting in a Range Rover with flashing blue lights and hearing the driver next to me say (with reference to a chocabloc road ahead) " Wanna see me move this lot to one side "? We did well in excess of a ton in the outside lane an you aint never seen cars ahead get out of your way so bloody quick. Whatever, one day I went to see a chief inspector at a big headquarters. I stopped at the security barrier and told the policeman on duty who I had come to see. He looked at me and said
" Do you know who you are"?rolling on the floor laughing

I said " yes of course I do" and gave my name. He then went bright red and said " Sorry, I meant, does he know who you are?"rolling on the floor laughing
