I had a bad accident late Thursday night. My truck is totaled! I layed it over on its side in the median after hitting 2 HUGE COWS that were in the road, standing in my lane!
It was pitch black outside, almost midnight, out in the country on a divided 4 lane road. I had just crossed a bridge, checked my surroundings, observed oncomming traffic, looked in front of me and the 2 cows were standing just in front of my hood. I hit them both, they knocked my headlights out and sent me into the center median. I was headed for the oncomming traffic when the enbankment became very steep, uphill, and it tipped the truck and trailer over onto its right side. We slid for about a trailer length (53 feet) and came to a stop at the edge of the oncomming shoulder.
If my truck had crossed that lane, I would have gone down a 30 foot embankment and into a 20 foot tall levy formed from a huge pile of boulders. I would have been killed!
My life was spared. My dog and I are fine. I have a few cuts and bruises, but no broken bones. The hospital just called to tell me the radiologist was looking at the x-rays and noticed "foreign matter" in my hand, probably a sliver of glass. They want me to have it checked out and get the glass removed.
dang, that must have been a ruff ride....but, like kissmedeeply said....im glad your ok....can the owner of the cows be held responsible?....just curious

Thanks everyone!
The cows of course are dead. The farmer/owner came to pick them up and took them to his property within an hour of the accident. I was at the hospital so I did not have the opportunity to meet with him.
Yes, the farmer is liable.
Yes, I have great insurance! I will know all of the details on Monday when I meet with our President and the Safety man and numerous other investigators.
No, I will not buy another truck. I will drive someone else's truck if I go back to driving. Perhaps they will provide schooling for career change, which is what I am wanting to do.
The farmer did not even share the meat... Not even fair! My dog would have really enjoyed those cows!!! Black Angus!!!

The_Kansan: FWIW - When a cow has been hit by a truck what's left is generally unfit for consumption by either humans or animals.
To the O.P. - That's a bummer! Hope your logbook was in good shape!
I took that cow for a ride! Dumped him off in the median! He must of rode on the left fender. He crapped on the left side of the truck. I really did knock the crap out of him!
Of course my logbook was in perfect shape. I had just left the yard 2 hours and 45 minutes before the accident. Funny, no one has asked to see it yet!
