Being confused is the worst part here.. Just pick one you are comfy with and do it.... Some people like to write emails, some are chatty and some like the phone... I personally love the phone but I think you might need to send a couple emails back and forth and make sure you have a positive connection, then ask for a phone number and go for it....

For me, a telephone call is already very personal. I mean, the person is going to be talking right into my ear, that's very close
So in no way would I want to do that first. With me, a few emails, then an IM chat (which can totally ruin any and all good impressions of the guy, especially when he made a lot of sense in the first promising emails), and then, IF all goes well, a phone call.

Agree!! Use Skype instead of phone for long conversations. It's exactly the same but free!!!!
And if things progress but you are far apart you can also use webcam to see one another while you talk.
Also bril for communicating with family and talking while seeing how they are or how much they've grown for (grand)kids!!! So much more personal than phone!!!!

Yes, my breeder even did puppy evaluation over Skype once!! (the puppies were on another continent)
Still, to me the phone is the most personal way of communication (apart from "in person" itself, obviously). It's just cool to sit in a traffic jam and see that special person's number come up on your caller ID, calling you just to ask how your day is going.
Besides, Skype is SO fully of people spamming you each and every day wanting to "get to know you" these days, it's quite shocking! I wonder what criteria they use for selection...
