Hugz_n_Kissez: I was so busy running at one time when my kids were small between work..late night meetings...school activities etc...that I got to the point where I didn't know how to relax anymore and I actually felt guilty when I wasn't doing something...what I had to do was...decide what was important to me...and weed out all the things that weren't as important to simplify my life a lot...that left me the energy and time to focus on exactly what I needed to focus on...instead of running in 10 different directions all the time...

My normal response to that would have been "I don't have time" laugh Now that I have taken the time..I am feeling a bit lost, don't know what direction to go in, don't know where to start in taking care of medunno
This is coming from a woman who takes care of a lotta stuff for other people and cant do it for herselfdoh

TurkishDelight: Unfortunately, I cant do that ...its the nature of the work that I do. I have to be available at the end of the phone for particular reasons 24/7..its just the way it is.
I took a year out, over two years ago and considered leaving then but ended up getting sucked back in again with the job that I do. A very close friend of mine told me the other night that my main problem is that I am simply a workaholic.
To be honest I was taken back by that cos I would never see myslef as that focused, yet when he asked me when was the last time I took a day off, I realised it was when I took that year off!

You enjoy your work and that is a huge bonus. You do not enjoy the detriment of it encompassing every aspect of your life that is a huge drain and drawback.
Time off is out of the question by your own words but there is a respite required.
What hobbies do you have that can be enjoyed while the job sits idle?
How much time in an average day is required for this job to be properly fulfilled?

Make the most of the time when you are not required to be 'present' for work.
By making the most of it I recommend ensuring proper rest, food and time for yourself. It is likely in the time for yourself department that you are lacking, and it is mandatory for your emotional well-being. Do something for you during the moments that occur during each day that you have them to spare.
There will be days when the time is minimal and you should still seek solace in something free of the weight of work. Others will be more open to some degree and it is during these times that you need to focus on you.
Healing of this nature comes from within and if you have no time to be intro-spective, reflective, at peace or otherwise not subject to the rigors or work you will run the tank dry.
It is all too easy to just drop and sit idle awaiting the next foray into the chaos of work, and that is never enough as the time, regardless of its duration will seem a blink of the eye. If you can reflect back upon it and see some sort of accomplishment it will remain chronologically as a separation from work and as a place for your mind to return to for rebuilding energy.

I do enjoy my work, the difficulty lies within the bureaucracy that I have to deal with on a daily basis that adds the stress factor.
The Respite, as you have aptly put it, was brought about by a stress test I had to take last week..the average person, if their scores are above 500, are deemed medically stressed. When I was tested, I was aware of the undertones of those around me, it felt as if they knew something that I didn't.......my scores were through the roof. They were so high, the tester literally stood with their mouth open and couldn't speak for a few minutes. That's when I realised that I had to walk away and re-assess what I do with my life
At this present moment.... I don't know which direction to take. I don't know where to begindunno

Well unfortunately we can enjoy our jobs and but the beauracracy is always gonna be there and it's not gonna change...maybe you can see about another job at a place doing the same job that might have a better work environment because trust me..once you start hating to walk through that door...it only gets worse from there...mainly because the beauracracy is out of your control....wave wink hug teddybear hug bouquet comfort

TurkishDelight: Tip

You have just hit the nail on the head!! Saying that I don't get snappy I withdraw into myself

We all have our limits, even if we do love the job. I worked as a cook for three years and loved it. The people I worked w/ were nice and all, but the managers shifted around and their personal dramas got involved which sent me over the deep end. I had to switch. I still like my job and am learning a new skill, which is neat. I miss cooking, but not enough to jump back into all that stress.

And I have worked phones before. I had to quit that too, it made me really ill. You know, those illnesses that the doc can't figure out, then you quit your job and voila, your healed. Yeah, that was awsome! grin

You need to go on a retreat and find yourself, your limitations and really get a good relaxing/positive energy type hobby. That shoudl help, confused hopefully.

TurkishDelight: That's just the problem you see....I like what I do, I enjoy the challenges it brings to me everyday. I don't want to leave my job.I need to find a better way of doing it, and separating it from my life..trying to figure out of way of doing that

Hire an answering service. They'll take messages for you and you can get back to people when you have time. Makes more normal work hours and gives you time off. That's if you're self-employed, which I presume you are since I know of no employer that doesn't give vacation time. I don't know about laws regarding this in the rest of the world, but in the US it would be illegal not to offer time off. The only people I know that work like you stated are self-employed.

I agree, though...take some time off if you can't figure out how to give yourself some while still employed. It's not worth burning out...it will affect your health eventually, too.

And if you're answering a phone 24/7, when do you sleep, grocery shop, clean the house, etc?confused

You are the most important thing you have. Take good care of yourself. hug
