Folks i'm off line for a while..my PC has a serious case of VD. The other day I down loaded some sheet music and got infected. Before I used a site called 'Olga'(on line guitar archine) but lawyers from the MPA and NMPA otained a court order and sadly Olga is no longer...and it was excellent. Olga was the buisness.

So i'm going to disinfect my hard drive etc...I tried the anti virus i had..no good. un-installed it, re-installed another (almost as heavy as norton) no good....so i might have to re-install every thing. So i'm backing every thing up and closing down for a wee while...

So folks if you can't be good, be carefull..failing that don't get caught.

Watch out what you back up! You might backup the virus as well.

I would suggest to install Norton Internet Security 2009 and run a thorough virus check.

All these anti virus programs confuse me.

I´ve just bought a new laptop, so no problems, and I have a free 3 month Norton thingy, soon to expire. My old laptop functions, but is slow and I´m sure is infected.

What can you reommend when the Norton protection runs out? Are there really any free anti virus programs or should I pay and renew the Norton package?

I´ve decided to hang on to the old laptop specifically for downloads and avoid doing this on the new one.

Hi Jan..Only use one Anti Virus..if you have two installed they will knock each other out(unless you turn one off)...I have never paid for an anti virus. And I never will...

If you have a problem go to

All the tools for windows, mac, linux, what ever is there...the site is very easy to navigate. At the minute I have re-installed an anti virus called Avira....Norton is too heavy for me. Avast is the same almost (it's heavy also) but they are very good. AVG is free and excellent as well.

Check out the site softpedia(just google the name with out clicking the link)....All their programmes have ratings and reviews...and their links for downloading are secure...

If I can do it....you wont have have a problem<--mean that in a nice way

Thanks Phoenix, but what do you mean by "too heavy?" I thought Norton was the best. My new laptop is vista, should that make a difference in what I choose from this site?

I´ll take a look and make an unqualified choice!

Take shots advice....AVG is excellent....go to the site an put in AVG and read their reviews..As for being heavy i simply mean it can slow down your pc only beacause there is only a lot off scanners working with it.

Just as a point of interest, no-one in the trade that I know (Have been a computer engineer for 25+ years) uses Norton, its very greedy, eats memory, and almost impossible to fully remove should youwant to use a better more streamlined AV. I would take the advice offered, uninstall norton as best you can and then install AVG, oh and make sure you download AVG first, before getting rid of norton.

All depends on whether you wish you download legal copies or not, can't advise on illegal software, but for legal copies just use google to find the title you want.

I agree with you on one thing. Norton WAS memory greedy. The new Norton is fast, does not eat memory and is still very good. I use Norton since years and have no complains.

One more thing. One can remove Norton completely if one wants to.

OK I don't want to get into the pros and cons of Norton McAfee Kapersky and Co. because that debate has raged back and forth over the years and each has its adherents and slaggers and so on. I personally use Kapersky, it updates the virus signatures every time I power up my PCs and I haven't had major problems for years. I also run Spybot Search and Destroy and other adware cleaners once in a while. I also have a backup strategy which means I have Ghost images (Norton Ghost aka Symantec) on another drive which means I can restore my operating system to the state I had the last time I made the images. When I suspect a virus I also use the internet anti-virus that I recently recommended here (www.housecall.trendmicro.com)
But I also have a Linux operating system on one computer with a dual-boot menu when I boot up. This means I can select Linus or Windows as the OS. I select Linux when I'm going to download stuff which is likely to contain viruses or visit dodgy sites.
The viruses are small software programmes written by nasty guys that will run on your computer and do things you don't want and probably you're unaware of. They can also be memory hogs and slow down your PC. The viruses are written for the Windows OS and won't run on Linux.
They also won't run on Macs (though there are apparently one or two viruses written for Macs nowadays) so when buying a new laptop it's not a bad idea to consider a Mac. 2 of my 3 daughters and my ex have Macs and guess what, no viruses. Also the Mac operating system can now be installed on non-Macintosh computers, using workarounds that Macintosh is trying to ban.
Hope this helps someone.

Is there any way I can get rid of all the banner ads? There is one in particular (in Spanish) which is asking me if I want to know how much time I have left before my death, accompanied by a creepy laugh!

I blame quiri, it appeared after my tarot reading laugh
