Better as in what way? It's already one of the best places to live.

I suppose I could say it should be more demanding of common sense and individual responsibilities while at the same time doing away with frivolous laws that spend pages upon pages just trying to cover loophole after loophole from being utilized but that would take the wisdom of Solomon.

Make your tax rules more easy to understand for us poor visitors and add service in with the price of a meal drink and then tipping is purely for the good service provided....it is a nightmare trying to work out the percentage of the bill to leave as a tip say in Florida.

The problem with all things is people! We need to improve the people. There is too much me me me and not enough us us us. People are so hung up on image, pridefulness, better than you, things, money, and stuff.
A persom with millions will feed their lust without holding back and at the same time not even look to see who could use some help. Then the only help seems to be for the purpose of P.R.,advertisement and self serving.
People will lie cheat steal the things from other that they need to feed their families. Take a store owners payment and use it to buy a video game and let the store guy get his gas cut off and sleep in 11 degree weather without a care.

We need to work on people. There is not enough good ones around any more. it was in times past that a woman and kids were safe on the streets. You could veave your doors unlocked and got to town. Leave your doors open wide at night while you sleep.

A man could find a woman who wanted love, family and husband...now a spouse is only a means to get for me me me in most cases. People using people. If we had good moral people.....the rest would fall in place.

I agree with your points Rilly but to find GOOD MORAL PEOPLE seems to be he gordian knot of everything. It can not be produced by preaching at all unless rotten society was suppressed, and how to do that?
Just simply trapped.

So other than my simple opinion that compared to most countries, it is a great place to live I surmise that your point is that there are not enough laws in place?

Make the Government much smaller as in 90% smaller and reduse the laws to 10... if you get my meaning. Bailouts should have gone to the people and then those companies that needed to survive would have and the others would have been left for dead on the side of the road.

Tipping is based on quality of service not on a percentage. If your service sucks, you can still eat my table scraps, if your service is outstanding you will get my customary 25%-50% tip. I am very good at awarding quality. Incentive for doing a good job.

Yup! people will only change outwardly if forced, but inside they look for loopholes. When it all comes to a head...global war and those that remain will join together to survive. Then morals and common decent, humane, kindness will grow out of need to work together.

WE are talking about a sense of spirit. The truth is:
Everything manifests from the inside out. It begins in our
Mind. We all need to have better 'ideals' or ideas. It does
no good to look at another and say you should be doing this
or you should be doing that. What about having the good
thought and sharing it with the Other? Criticism only returns
back onto ourself and then what have we accomplished? Mind.
It all begins in the mind, Our Mind. The world 'out there' is
what we have created. Spirit is not contained - it is shared.

We all need to check the quality within ourselves.

Maybe I mean that, but that subject is complicated.

On the other hand the OP said America and I suppose he meant the USA while you are Canadian and I am Peruvian (but still Americans, say, from thsi continent).

Well, I do not like any of those countries and I have stayed enough time in both of them to say that. Of course this is my taste and it does not have to meet the agreement of anyone. To me it is ironically cruel that politicians and people talk about freedom in those countries when simple daily life is just a bird-cage and a meaningless rush for money and other little things to fill inner misery. That is my opinion too, and I could not say much about how to make the US a better place to live. To stop all that consumerism and selfish madness? to change society from the bottom? I only see radical changes and they are all beyond reach now.

What is going to happen when we are all on the edge of
disaster? We are going to be saying, "God help me!!",
or
in our minds we will say to our loved ones, "This is it, I
Love you." It will be from the Mind.

Even if we don't recogize it, we, all of us, have a 'knowing'
of the waft of spirit within us.

Here in the UK there is a 17.5% tax on everything except kids clothing and footwear, some food and it is added in to the cost. No part of the country is different and then if you feel the service has been worth a tip you decide what to give! Normal at least 10% gratutity. I have seen some really greedy waiting staff in Fort Lauderdale etc! I object to having to give a waitress who has not giving the correct service say $20 bucks for a meal that was $70 (2007 prices on this particular meal)

Leave $1 if the service was bad.
Leave $14 (20%) if good.
If one can afford $70 for a meal then what's $14 ?
