Footsteps

You who walk in the foot-steps of Kings:
Why are your hearts filled with hate?

You who walk in the foot-steps of Kings:
Why are your minds filled with filth?

You who walk in the foot-steps of Kings:
Rulers- who can not even rule yourselves!

Your hearts should be inviolate.
Why are they not?

Your minds should be incorruptible.
Why are they not?

You walk in the foot-steps of Kings.
Yet you settle for being the lowest of the low?

You walk in the foot-steps of Kings.
You should be shining lights for those living in darkness.

Yet you prefer to blossom like this sick man:
That which wind brings-- that which its dust swallows...?

How dare you- to follow in the foot-steps of Kings
while pretending to yourselves that you are worthy...?

About this poem:
When Queen Cleopatra died, her servant Charmian is supposed to have summed up her life thus:

"She died worthy of someone who has walked in the foot-steps of so many Kings..."

To the people of the Middle East and North Africa- out of whose book we can all take a leaf...

To walk in the footsteps of kings would be a noble achievement indeed... but to walk in the footsteps of the KING OF KINGS would bring about the most desired change of behavior for all of mankind! - There's a real challenge! Deny 'self' for the love of others!
Thanks for your interesting insight into world affairs Hekamaat!!
