i'd prefer equal roles that we can interchange depending on the situation, pretty much like yin and yang.

Yep! That sound much like the Swedish way of doing things.
For me there are times when I wish to dominate, times when I hope my partner will take the lead, times when I will cook and times when I would like my meal made by others. Aren't good relationships about change, about swopping roles, about caring for and being cared by, about being encouraged to initiate, and appreciative of others initiation.
Perhaps some role play for the bedroom
