Although I am a smoker I do agree that provision should be made for both the smoker and non-smoker.
But with regard to the amount of toxins a smoker injects into the atmosphere in the average street, shouldn't all traffic be banned in public places due to the far greater amount that they omit ? Close to schools in particular ?

R,
most schools here, already have a policy in place asking parents not to idle their cars at school (do they listen...nope...lol)
i'm a smoker, (trying to quit) and in vancouver, smoking is already banned in bars, restaurants, public areas including commercial entrance/doorways, all parks and beaches. pretty much everywhere. in the bldg i live in, smoking is banned in all common areas including outdoors on the property.
do i think it should be banned? yes, in indoor spaces and near doorways and bus stops. but i don't agree with the outdoor thang. ('cept during fire season and then it's just plain stupid to smoke in the parks and forests).

It's only when you watch 'not so old' films and tv dramas that you realise just how commonplace and widespread smoking in public places was and how much better we are after the ban. Having said that, most pubs and bars could easily have well ventilated smoking areas rather than being forced outside for the odd ciggie.
Hey Trisher...all good and well you are thinking of others but at the same time it seems smokers are under fire while i dont see many threads about those who drink...They can Ban smoking when they return to a state of Prohibition..
Then they wont get the much needed tax dollars they rip off everybody..Also the ones complaining the most are reformed smokers..JMHO
Show me someone who died from second hand smoke and I will show you a lunatic. They blame second hand smoke because processed foods, engine emissions, pharmaceutical drugs, cell phones, computers etc are actually worse than second hand smoke. So we need a "Boogeyman" to blame on the cancer people get because "who knows what would happen if people knew cellphones had a direct link to cancer(brain tumors)".

Answer to your Question is no i dont think it should be banned .
But as an ex driver of Chemical Tankers on public roads ,iff the general public new what they were living amongst and what goes on , C.P.Cs creeping out amongst the population ,i dont think ciggies in the street would be high priority . .
