Do you have a bible at home? (257)

trish123: Hey Mike, I have noticed 'certain' people trying to claim some of the ancient beauties, such as yoga for instance, as the right of the christian God - what do you think of this - do you see it as a travesty of hhuman righteousness as I do?

I find a lot of what some "Christians" claim, to be a travesty. Entering this new age, the church had better shape up and get a hold of itself, or it may find it is unprepared and ill-equipped to deal with a world exiting the modernistic way of thinking.

That is I find most challenging. To a modernist, who believe in absolutes, I can find a common ground on which we can fight (scientific, historical, legal, literary). But with a "postmodernist" there are not absolutes, or truths, so how can I find a way to argue with that? As a novice Christian Apologists, I am going to have to abandon some of the skills or tools I have found most handy in my quest, and find new ones to use.

It is an interest time to be alive. confused

crotalus_p: Id like to see a poll for the people that have one asking “who actually reads it” I know a lot of people that profess undying faith but have yet to read the Bible with the exception of the passages read out in the church (that is when they bother to go to)

This is a sad confession for most of us. I myself have only read the bible through once. That was one of the few good things I did while I was in bible college. Almost every year I set out to read the bible again in a year, but always get side tracked. This year I didn't ever start. sigh

Highly entertaining as always B,

but I cannot see you not having at least one copy. If you do not have one now, then I bet you did until recently. Your arguments are too refined not to have some knowledge of the bible.

I know you are not one to argue with something of which you have no knowledge or grasp.

You are not one of these that only argue against without presenting what you are arguing for. Your not one of these fools who only argue I am wrong, without having an idea or belief of their own. I have found some of the ideas you present as very interesting.

And I thank you sir. comfort

I got the old ram it down your throat experience Mike.... one of the many reasons I hate scripture posts. I can still see that pedophilic moron sittin in his chair spouting mindless gooble di gook at a numb group of kids, who's only wish was to pick their nose and find some place to stick it. Vulcan Mind Melds weren't allowed in those days of course... so we hada go with mind saturation techniques. KIDDING. that was some other poor fool's life.

I get the answers I need from friends and reading Mike. The rest is common sense applications. wine

Believe it or not, and you will believe because you're just that way, one can find some rather sound and interesting ideas not only in one's own mind by thinking and comparing information, then drawing sound parallels; but in other books as well, that expand on the idea of free thinking.

If nothing else, I am not one to blame, nor adore a god for anything, because its up to me, no one else. Having a book around that supports such a mindless (to me) idea is a travesty to free thinking people such as my self.

I admit I do not know as much verbatim as some, but the ideas presented in bibles are not uncommon to man by any means. Afterall they are the word of man himself.

I do have a Buddha statue $19.95 ... but he's a GNDN like the controls in the Enterprise on Startrek. rolling on the floor laughing

I also have a grade ten ejumacation diploma somewhere ... probably a bookmark in one of heffs issues now ..laugh

Only people that havent got a clue need that book to give them a fake sense of spirituality. I don't need an old book for that. Besides all gods are concepts. I am the only one and we are all one.

Well of course you will need intelligence to decipher the message.

What I am saying is that the overall message of the Bible is LOVE.

Very simply put... it's about LOVE!

Not stupid, more ignorant. It is more taking the easy way out. It supports your weakness. you should strengthen your powers. I don't need a religion to do all those things. That Novel was written 150 years after the year 0000. I meditate, I can heal people with my hands. I can communicate sometimes with passed over relatives... I just cant walk on water. Yet!! :)

Wait...maybe that was Paul.
Seems to me that if I didn't have a clue and was looking for a fake sense of spirituality, any book would do. Luckily, that ain't me.

And yes....I own a few bibles. Favorite is the NIV. Been a while since I read it cover to cover, I think I'll do that again.

Peace,

Yes, Ihave a bible at home, and yes I have read this bibkle. Also I have read the Coran and jewesh and Buddhistic words. But Ic cant understand why ppl belive in a fairytale? How much of the bibke is true autentic words do you think? Only a little bit.
The Bible, for example, is a very old book, and one should have read them(it) at least sometimes. It is no Original text. She became from more than 5000 single works together. In the year 370 instructed the pope Damasus I the dalmatian Hieronymus to join everything to one book. Called in the beginning : The Vulgata. The secretary of the pope changed these Vulgata then at more then 3500 places. For example, Hieronymus mentions the Trinity from the first letter Johannes in none of his duplicates. But in book, which was presented to the Conzil by Trento this passage is included. Even theologians see, in the meantime, in it a forgery. On 15.01.1897 there was a papal decree that the Trinity belong to the steady component of the new testament and the change was inspired by the holy mind. And already everything was good again. This is only a recording of 1000 changes.
Who is in this the concept of a true god?
I dunno, I think ppl need a higher character to apoligy thier own failures. Its easier to belief that some "god" will save us as to take the own life in your own hands and make the best of your life.
You can sit in your home and prey for a better life, but no one will knock on your door and will change your life.. only you alone can do this.. and for this you dont need a "construct of a higher power or maybe you will call it god.
maybe I cant see it, but please ell me, if i'm wrong what is the meaning of a thing like god.. what did it changed in your life what you couldn't do by your own power?

I belive Jesus's Gospel was holy.Because all of his teaching has came from God.

But if someone writing Gospel with different words, that is cant be holy book.Because words is not caming from God.

MikeHD: You should start with the beginning. See if you can find a way to pick up a copy of the Book of Mormon, and then have it handy when you read "The pearl of great price" by Joseph Smith. I think going to the source is always a good way to start. It helps you avoid other's opinions, and gives you a chance to form one of your own.

Thanks mike

I enjoy Sirach 37 verse 16 - 22
wisdom and tempermance

A word is the source of every deed,
a thought of every act

The root of all conduct is in the mind
four branches it shoots forth,

Good and Evil Death and Life
their absolute mistress is the tongue

A man may be wise and benefit many,
yet be of no use to himself

Though a man may be wise if his words are rejected
he will be deprived of all enjoyment

When a man is wise to his own advantage,
the fruits of his knowledge are seen
in his own person

When a man is wise to his people's advantage
the fruits of his knowledge are enduring
