smallworlds: Sometimes you don't think to ask about the obvious. Recently I was writing to two men via email and discovered that both of them were afraid to fly. As a person who loves all types of travel and flying I found this interesting. They both had very different reasons for their fear and this made me wonder what other reasons people have for being afraid to fly.
I don't particularly care for heights yet I love to fly. Always have. I love the convenience of being able to go from point A to point B when making a long trip quickly. If I would drive to see my son it would take me nearly a week. So by the time I got there it would be time for me to go back home to work I do like road trips. But when it comes to days in the car, no stops except for gas and food I would rather not drive. I find large planes such as commercial flights are a much smoother flight than the little two passenger Cessna's. I do know quite a few who have a fear of flying. Me I would fly for the fun of it
Making my own flying machine, getting it up in the air and coming back down in on piece is high on my 'fifty things to do before I die' list. So far I only managed to make Panamarenko-esque scrap sculptures.

I live in a town that has hosted a place called piper aircrafts for decades. It is common in our town for citizens to make their own aircraft. I don't know if that is what you had in mind. You being an artist you might choose to draw up your own plans. I guess what I am trying to say it is easier to do than one would think. I have made two boats and a motorcycle from scratch never a plane. For some reason I want to learn to fly one yet don't care for building it.

Artist, no. Handy and crafty maybe. My own plans it will be. The complicated make-it-up-as-you-go-along type or the pick and mix... I have the plans for a volksplane, the Bower's Fly-baby and Corben's Baby ace. A good start for what would be possible within a reasonable budget. But thinking more along the lines of a Cri-Cri. I know those old chainsaws will come in handy one day... The problem would not be the making of it but making it following legal requirements. Living just not remote enough, there is a bureaucratic muck heap...that I can't ignore. But time is not on my side. A few years back I promised my daughter I'll make her one. With her elephant like memory every few months she kicks me against the shins with a big "Oi! What's the story?..." She has the nasty habit of growing up and getting stronger. Not sure what to do about that and kicking her back still seems unfair for now.
smallworlds: These are so funny. I would like to get a copy of them. Where are they from. I searched a bit on the net but have not found them there.
Did find a joke I like.
Taxiing down the tarmac, the jetliner abruptly stopped, turned around and returned to the gate.
After an hour-long wait, it finally took off.
A concerned passenger asked the flight attendant, “What was the problem?”
“The pilot was bothered by a noise he heard in the engine,” explained the Flight Attendant, “and it took us a while to find a new pilot.”
There are some who say, when you are eight miles in the air, in an aluminum tube a 550mph, you are passing the whole world by. It's like me riding my bike, no destination, it is all about the journey.

lushguy4you: its the flying that most people have issues with although some do.
The whole waiting at airports spoils it and customs have gone overboard as each airport has different rules.
sometimes its a airport joke more than flying itself.
Yes, and flying to the US is the worst with all the security checks. Still love to fly though....have flown in aeroplanes, large and small, microlight that crashed, hot-air balloon, helicopters...all great fun. Especially love flying when there is turbulence.
tomcatwarne: I love flying, especially the take off and landing, on the take off when they turn on full throttle and you are pushed back into your seat is a powerful feeling. I always book a window seat and you can pass the time flirting with the stewardesses
My real Daddy. Like daddy like daughter. I love flying, and always book front window seat (even ready to pay more for that). My favorite time is the take off and landing. And during flight hour will be universe with sky........feel great. as we are free birds....
