rebel2: Hello I agree with you. Whether they were guilty or not, and everyone will have there opinion, forensics were unable to prove the case, and it is not always possible to do so.
If we move away from that then we are going back to the dark ages and becoming like many of the counties we despise.
Lock them up for life by all means.

In response to: I don't agree with the death penalty. But on the flip side, murderers have far more rights than their victims did. Laws must be properly followed and they do have their rights within our legal system.
likewise I'm not on the forums much but have strong views against the death penelty and I know everyone is entitled to their opinions but you worded your opinion and knowledge of it excellently.all best to South Africa from little me in Eire.pleased to meet you.handshake

rebel2: Is it justice that a civilised society seeks or revenge?
Do we execute the jurors who send an innocent person to there death to get revenge for the family of that innocent person?
"No" would be the cry, It would be unfair", so why is it that some feel that the possibility of executing an innocent person is acceptable?

You must not get justice and revenge mixed up though. Justice, has at its core, ideas around fairness, equity and balance. Revenge is not usually tolerated in a civilised society.

Simple and realistic and the way it should be....Any eye for an eye.Yes there are contingincies, such as self defence, but that's where it stops. Its a very small percentage that a person is proven innocent after a few years. If you are proven guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt f murdering somene, you must pay for it with your life.Mainly for the dignity for the life that you've taken.A life for a life.Only judicial fairness.

You know what I find ironic to the point that it's almost unbelievable about death penalty support in the USA? The really vocal supporters of it tend to be these anti-government ("Big Gubment") right wing folk. They fear Sharia Law might be coming, that death panels lurk somewhere in the pages of "Obamacare," that there are plots and conspiracies afoot, and so on. Then they turn around and say, "Yeah! Hang 'em!" I mean, it's baffling. Oklahoma and Texas are fantastic examples. So, I think it isn't really small government that they want, but rather oligarchy.

peachmelba: imagine if the death penelty had been in the uk the Guildford four and Birmingham 6 would have been put to death innocent souls before evidence came to light of them being proved innocent and still in this day and age mistakes can be made with forescics ,this point of my argument is the main reason why I'm against the death penalty and as for people who commit horrendous crimes life should mean life in prison behind bars and never let out to reoffend.

that's ok in theory but who`s going to control them if you `ve no chance of release and a prison guard annoy`s you kill him what more can they do to you these people might think
confused dunno doh

keeping ppl on death row till they die of old age is moronic. it would be better once the found guilty to die just like their victim did. better yet would be to give them an injection so they would die slowly and painfully. being humaine to a person on death row is stupid. they even get free medical care so when punishmet is carried out they are in good health. hopefully the justice system will realize death row means death. rite now its just a retirement home for killers

Killing another human being is terrible . But why are they sitting on death row... This last execution in Oklahoma is being called botched... That it took 40 some minutes before he died.. and some are saying that this was wrong. My question is how long has he lived with a roof over his head and free to him food and medical? He had been sentenced for shooting a woman and burying her alive. What about this woman? What about the victims rights...Cold you imagine how it felt to someone being buried alive.... He was a convicted killer...And tax payers paid for his stay in Oklahoma State Penitentiary

And how exactly does an execution benefit a victim or enforce her/his rights? And are we now to place a dollar and cents value on human life? If you can place a value on the killer's life, then perhaps we should do the same for victims and reparation could be monetary, too, as it was in the Dark Ages. And if the argument is that a killer's life has no value, then are we any different in our thinking to the killer who also placed no value on human life?

I can understand victims' loved ones feeling a need for revenge, but then it is not they who are carrying out the execution but dispassionate, emotionally unaffected people who make and carry out that decision. Criminal law is not about justice but about protecting society, and keeping convicted killers behind bars for life does just that.

I can't feel any pity for such a cruel criminal, but experiment new execution drugs with a convict is a very controversial matter.

But I neither agree these economic arguments against death penalty. To support it because it's cheaper than life prison isn't an acceptable reason in my view.

Well, regardless of what we think of the death penalty (and those who clamor for it), can we all agree that it should not be dealt to innocent people?

At least 4% of death row inmates are likely wrongly convicted.

This is also interesting since another study shows that in the USA the death penalty is on the decline. Quite a number of northern states have banned it, and in the rest it is exceedingly difficult to actually have it applied, so you have Texas, Oklahoma, and a couple of southern states, I think, that mainly use it. And we all know who dominates politics there: very mad

That it is getting harder for states to purchase the chemicals used to execute prisoners means that we at minimum need an indefinite, comprehensive moratorium on capital punishment in the USA. And it is past time to have it ruled unconstitutional.

I am not saying that their execution benefits the victim....The victim lost her rights when he killed her.. What I am saying is that I believe in the death penalty. If the courts find someone quilty and sentence them to die.. Then that is just the way it rolls. I realize that they don't go straight to their death like their victims did... Revenge I am not saying it is the reason for their death.... Value on a killer's life... well he or she put their own value on their life. We all have opinions and we may disagree. I just think if they sentence to death and they might experience some pain.....They should... they should feel the pain. Something....Florida use to use an Electric Chair...Old Sparky I believe that is what they called it.. Sorry if it offends.. but just saying...my opinion..

But it is "just" when someone is in army uniform? Sending soldiers off to war to "murder" innocent men..(Who's only crime is joining thier country's armed forces) men with families and children.. This is acceptable? ..But killing a Murderer (someone who killed his victim to satisfy his own sick need!!) This is "not acceptable"??? Give me a break.. These are people we also need to protect the country against, not house them!
Yes to the death penalty! They took it away here, and now murders have increased, why? Because they know the only consequence might be sitting in prison

I think it is barbaric.
It might be, but if they use lethal injection I don't think it would be.

I used lethal injection to put my cat to sleep and I was told it was a humane thing to do and painless.

Hi Squeezie :) it is shocking, and murders like this happen daily here, our prisons are overcrowded.. Yes her name was Geraldine.. When you think of it, the leathal injection is getting off lightly! Infact, they even sterilize the needle, so they don't contract any infection ?

Obstinance_Works: I'd rather there was no death penalty and instead we locked serious offenders away in prisons that were austere and cheap to run so we can spend more money on good people.

The problem now is that most people are women or think like women and from this they tend use the state and our institutions as mechanisms to Mother grown adults. Which now we means that we allocate vast resources to the most defective of people and discriminate against good people, in the same way that a Mother will give the most of herself to the worst of her children at the expense of all her other children. Or the way a woman rewards bad behaviour by sleeping with bad boys.

Apart from seeming to know so much about women on a 'global scale', you really are a Class A1 misogynist, aren't you?!

bodleing2: Indeed, his words have always been controversial, likely to hit nerves.

Maybe if any of them have hit a nerve in you...you could ask yourself why. Is it because your beliefs are being challenged?

That always makes us feel uncomfortable.

Well his comment doesn't make me uncomfortable or even come close to hitting a nerve, I just sometimes question why we need to quote from certain people from the past, it makes the assumption they knew better than those around us today. In 50 years maybe people will be quoting Katie Price with just the same conviction in her ideology.

I am not sure his ideology plays such an important role in 2014, although accept some of his philosophy has created useful debates which possibly lead to a better understanding.
